Description

(No Model.)
A. M. POSTER. BARK nossme DEVICE.
No. 563,584. Patented July 7, 1896.
Wwwezai jnaemior Zwu UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO M. FOSTER, OF OABOT, VERMONT.
BARK-ROSSING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,584, dated July '7, 1896.
Application filed November 11, 1895. Serial No. 568,579. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo M. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cabot, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Tool for Tapping Maple-Trees, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved barkrossing device to be used in connection with a bit for tapping maple-trees; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a means of removing the coarse outside bark from around the hole simultaneous with boring the hole,thereby facilitating the proper adjustment of the spout used for conveying the sap from the tree to the pail; second, to reduce the cost and heft of said device and render it easily adjustable to bits of various sizes and to diiferent positions on said bit;
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of the bit with the I'ossing device attached.
K is the knife provided with a sharp cutdepth the rosser comes in contact with the bark and, revolving with the bit in a circle larger than the hole, it cuts away a portion of the rough outside bark, leaving a smooth even surface, which operation has heretofore been performed by means of an ax or hatchet. The rosser also serves as a gage for determining the depth of the hole.
I am aware that prior to my invention bits have been supplied with a counterboring device for sinking the heads of bolts and screws. I therefore wish to emphasize the fact that this device is not a counterboring attachment, but rather a rosser or surfacing-tool for removing the convex or uneven surface usually found on the sugar-maple.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my own, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
An attachment for auger-bits consisting of a metal clamp formed by a tube open at one side with clamping-flanges at the edges of the opening in combination with the knife K, having a flat shank laid along the flange of the clamp-tube and having a cutting portion with its front edge projected at right angles from the shank and lying in a plane perpendicular to the-axes of the auger and a securing-bolt passed through said shank and flange and a nut.
