To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM WV. HUBBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,

Bottles containing cider which has worked, or any other effervescing liquid, must be handled carefully when it is desired to open and turn their contents into a glass, various stoppers having been devised for controlling and preventing the premature escape of the liquid before the glass has been placed in position. Among these are the ordinary lager-beer bottles, which are supplied with a wire cam-bail for gradually loosening the stopper. These cam -bails rest normally against the side of the bottle and are sometimes very diflicult to manipulate. My invention relates to bottles having stoppers of this character. When the cam-bail moves hard, after having been started, it flies up so quickly that it is impossible to properly control the stopper, which often flies open instantly and before a tumbler can be placed in position to receive the contents of the bottle, under which circumstances the greater portion of the liquid is lost.

The object of my invention is to provide an easily-adjusted clamp for the cam-bail of such a bottle, by which the stopper may be opened as slowly as desired, and just sufficientlyfor the escape of some of the gas, thus permitting the bottle to retain its contents long enough to enable one to successfully transfer the effervescing liquid to a tumbler; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the following specification and claims, of which Figure 1 represents a broken elevation of an ordinary lager-beer bottle and my improved opening device clamped to the cambail. To carry my invention into practice, I provide a clamp for the cam-bail, consisting of plates A B, which are loosely connected by the screws D D, passing loosely through the smaller plate A and threaded to the larger plate B, and while it is not necessary, it is nevertheless preferable to provide a suitable spring E, located between and secured to one of the plates by screws 6, as shown, for the purpose of keeping the curved jaws a, b of the clamping-plates separated for the easy entrance of the cam-bail X of the stopper Y, (shown on the bottle Z in Fig. 1;) and to tighten the clamping device upon the cambail a thumb-screw F is threaded to the smaller plate A at a point opposite the curved jaws, and this may be turned down more or less, so as to bear, as may be required, against the larger plate B. The curved jaws should have their edge beveled, especially the jaw 19 of the plate 13, as shown at b, in order that it may reach in between the neck of the bottle Z and the cam-bail X, as

Having thus described my'invention, what I claim is- 1. A device of the class described comprising a lever, a plate attached rigidly thereto and having a reentrant edge curved to lie against the neck of a bottle, headed pins projecting from the upper face of the plate, a second plate adapted to move on said pins and having a reentrant edge in alinement with that of the first plate, means for holding the plates normally apart and means for exerting a gripping action between them.
