UNITED STATES STANISLAS P. LEMAY, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MEDERIQUE R.
MAYNARD, OF SAME PLACE.
BENCH-VISE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 636,151, dated October 31, 1899-.
Application filed April 14, 1 899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANISLAS P. LEMAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the count-y of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Bench- Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
This invention relates to Vises designed for light uses-such, for example, as holding saws while being filed.
The objects of the invention are to provide a vise which shall be quickly attachable to a bench or other support and as quickly adj usted.
The invention will be fully set forth in the following specification and claim, and clearly illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same, of which Figure l is a broken elevation showing the jaws in end view. Fig. 2 is a similar illustration showing the jaws in side view. Fig. 3 is a detached elevation showing the inner side of one of the jaws.
Similar reference-letters designate corresponding parts in all views.
A is a casting having at one end a jaw B, and C is a casting having at one end a jaw D, said jaw D being made similar in form to the jaw B. The oppositeend of said part 0 is designed to be pivotally connected to the part A by a suitable pin E, and in order that said connection may be smoothly and neatly made the connecting end of the part C may be recessed on opposite sides, as at c 0, thus forming a tongue 0, adapted to fit between the ears 0, of the part A, as seen by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The jaws B D are conveniently and quickly adjusted by a device embodying a cam movement, which I will now describe.
A lever F passes through an elongated opening a, formed in the part A, and into a recess or socket 0 formed .in the part 0, wherein said lever is pivoted by a pin G. Said lever is adapted for vertical movement within the opening a of the part A, and when pressed downward the lower portion of its pivoted end f will bear against the part 0, thus separat Serial No. 712,988. (No model.)
ing the jaws B D or permitting them to be separated, and by raising said lever its curved shoulders f form contact with the thickened portion or cam 03 of the part A, which draws the jaws B D toward each other with great force, and in order to maintain the pressure thus obtained a pawl H is pivotally attached at h to said lever F and adapted to engage suitable serrations (1 formed for the purpose upon the part A, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
The lower end of the part A may be bifurcated for the reception of a lever J, pivoted therein by a pin K, the short end j of said lever being adapted to close tightly against the projecting edge of a table or bench, clamp ing the same between itself and a shoulder a of said part A, which shoulder may, if de sired, be provided with one or more prongs a. to prevent a possible slipping. The long end of said lever J is provided on its upper edge with serrations j with which a pawl L will engage for retaining the necessary pressure, said pawl being pivotally attached to the part A by a suitable pin Z, and, if desired, a suitable finger-piece Z may be formed upon the pawl for readily disengaging the same from the serrations of the lever J.
Having described my invention, what I claim is i In a bench-vise, a pair of bars one longer than the other, pivotally connected, and each provided with a jaw adapted for contact one with the other, said longer jaw havinga thickened portion convexed on its outside and having a vertically-elongated opening therein, a lever passing through said opening and pivotally connected to said shorter bar, said lever having a curved projection on its under side for contact with the lower end of said elongated opening and curved shoulders one on each side for contact with the oonvexed projection of said longer bar, whereby said jaws shall open or close by the movement of said lever, and means for retaining said lever in position to hold the jaws closed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
hi STANISLAS P. X LEMAY.
