A M WEBER GUMBINBII DRI-:ss PAGING AND SKIRT BINDING.
No. 562,943. Patented June 30, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARON M. IVEBER, OF OSI-IKOSII, VISCONSIN.
COMBINED DRESS-FACING AND SKIRT-BINDING.
SIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters )Patent No. 562,943, dated June 30, 1896.
Application filed May 18 1896.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON M. WEBER a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of 1Winnebago and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Dress-Facing and Skirt-Binding, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined Waterproof binding and skirt-facing for bicycle- Skirts.
I'Ieretofore great discomfort has been eX- perienced by ladies in riding bicycles, owing to the fact that with ordinary bindings the skirt is too light, and when Weighted with lead' or equivalent materials it hangs unevenly and flaps against the limbs, to the great annoyance of the wearer. The weighted parts also Wear out at the bottom and render the skirt unsightly.
The object of my invention is, first, to provide a combined skirt binding and facing especially adapted to be used by bicycleriders, which will not only serve as a binding and facing, but which Will add uniformly to the Weight of the lower edge of the skirt, and at the same time stiften it sufficiently to prevent it from hanging against the limbs of the wearer, and, second, to provide for the construction of the binding as an article of manufacture adapted to be very easily and quickly attached to the dress Without the necessity of sewing by hand through the stiifened portion.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side vien7 of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged edge view of my invention. Fig. 3 is also an edge view showing the binding in process of attachment to the skirt, with dotted lines indicating its attached posit-ion.
Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
A strip of velvet or other suitable cloth A is cut bias and lined with any suitable material, the lining B being secured to the vel- Sorial No. 591,918. (No model.)
vet by means of a solution of rubber, which renders it Waterproof. The strip is then folded and a strip of tape O is preferably sewed between the respective sides to prevent stretching. This tape, however, maybe omitted if desired. I then take ordinary dressgoods D, cut the same bias, and attach a lining E to it by means of rubber cement in the same manner that the strip A is prepared, as above described, thus forming a wide facing of rubber cloth for the lower part of the skirt. The facing is then laid upon the folded strip A with the edges together, and the facing and strip A are secured together by stitching. The upper edge of the facing is provided with a strip of tape F, which facilitates its attachment to the dress, it being preferable to do the stitching to the dress by hand, and the needle through the facing.
In attaching my facing to the shirt, the prepared strip is iirst laid in reversed position on the outside thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, and served thereto near the lower edges, the strip being then folded over on the inner side of the skirt, and secured to the dress-linin g by stitching through the braid F, the latter being the only case Where a machine cannot Well be used.
It will be observed that I have thus provided a dress binding and facing formed into a singleL article of manufacture of sufficient Weight and stiffness to make it hang properly, and Waterproof throughout. Itis very quicklyand easily attached to the skirt and can be Washed off When soiled Wit-hout removing it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A combined dress facing and binding comprising a facing-strip of bias-cut Waterproofed cloth having along its outer face at the lower edge a longitudinally-folded biascut Waterproofed binding, said binding being secured to the facing with its free edges flush with loWer edge thereof, as set forth.
rubber cement rendering it diiiicult to pass a' 2. A combined dress facing and binding comprising a facing-strip of bias-cut waterproofed cloth having along its outer face at the lower edge a longitudinally-folded biascut waterproofed binding, said binding being secured to Jche facing with its free edges insh with the lower edge thereof, said facing having along its inner face at the upper edge a narrow tape, said tape projecting above the edge of Jche facing, as set forth. zo
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AARON M. VEBER. Witnesses:
LEVERETT C. WHEELER, JAS. B. ERWIN.
