C. W. STORM.
SPRAY NOZZLE.
No. 562,863. Patented June 3U, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT Erice.
CHARLES WM. STORM, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
sPRAY-NozzLE.
SPECIFICATION folning part of Letters Patent No. 562,863, dated June 30, ISSS.
Application filed August 29, 1895. Serial No. 560,907. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WM.. STORM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Spray-Nozzle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lawn-sprinklers, and particularly to those which are adapted to spray the water, my object being to provide a nozzle with a reinforcing-chamber and provided with perforations so located and of such size and at such an angle as to project the water in a nely-divided condition to an extreme height. I also provide annular directing-lips in the circle of the perforations of such form and pitch as to widen and blend the spray, and I further provide a cut-off cap for my nozzle, which is pivoted centrally thereto and arranged for lateral movement thereover, whereby a narrow ribbon of spray may be projected, and this may be increased to a semicircle in the form of a portion of an inverted cone, or by loosely centering said cap a fine umbellar mist may be produced. These effects and objects are attained by means of the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved spraying-nozzle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the nozzle-top with the cap removed. Fig. i is an inverted perspective of the cap.
Referring to the details of construction by numerals, l designates the body portion of my sprayingnozzle, and it comprises a neck 2,pro vided with internal screw-threads, by which it may be affixed to the end of the water pipe Vor hose, and an outwardly-flared shoulder 3, which joins the upper end of neck 2 to the lower edge of a tubular section 4.-, said shoulder and tubular section constituting, respectively, the bottom and side walls of the reinf orcing-chamber 5. A flat top plate Gis closely fitted into the open upper end of chamber 5 and brazed or soldered or otherwise permanently secured to the side Walls el flush with their upper edges. Top plate 6 is provided with a central screw-threaded aperture 7 to receive shank 8 of set-screw 9. A short distance from the periphery of top plate 6 a groove lO is formed concentric thereto, provided on its inner side with a vertical wall l2 vand on its outer side with a iiaring wall 13, diverging from wall l2 at an angle of sixty degrees. Groove lO is provided with a series of perforations 14, which pass through top plate 6 at an angle of from twenty-five degrees to thirty-ve degrees, with their axes in the sharp bottom angle of groove l0.
Lying in close facial contact with top plate 6 is cut-off cap l5, of a size just barely to overlie annular groove l0. This cap l5 is dished out on its under side 16, so as to insure more certain Contact of face 17 at every point, and is provided with a radial slot 1S, extending from its pivot center, adapted to receive set-screw 9, whereby cap l5 may be slid back, so as to expose any number of perforations le up to the half thereof or thereabout.
The proportions of parts herein set forth are not arbitrary, but may be varied within reasonable limits, although those here given have been found to produce the most satisfactory results.
In operation my spraying-nozzle is screwed on the end of the water pipe or hose and properly fixed in position on the lawn. The water is turned on, and as it spurts out in iine jets through apertures 14 the vertical wall l2 bends the jet slightly upward and the obliquely-fiared wall 13 broadens said jet outwardly. At the same time the circumferential extension of said walls stretches the jets toward each other, whereby they become blended into one beautiful sheet of water, sprayed upwardly in the form of an inverted cone having its base gradually curved out to a horizontal and thence around to an umbrella shape. The expanded reinforcing chamber and the relative proportions and adjustments of parts setforth effect a throw of the water to a great height. Now, if itis desired to cut off a portion of the spray Without decreasing its throw, cap l5 is adjusted by means of the set-screw 9, and the rear portion of the spraying-cone is cut off, or so much more thereof as is desired, simply by adjusting said cap laterally by means of slot-1S and set-screw 9. By centrally adjusting said cap 15 and slightly loosening set-screw 9 a fine mist is produced.
l. In a spraying-nozzle, the combination with a reinforcing-chamber, of a top plate IOO secured to the outer end'of said chamber and provided with a circular groove concentric to said plate, said groove being provided with an inner vertical wall and an outer obliquelyflared wall, and a series of perforations through said plate opening into the bottom of said groove, whereby a thickened sheety spray is formed, substantially as described.
2. In a spraying-nozzle, the combination with a reinforcing-chamber, of aat top plate secured to the outer end of said chamber and provided with a circular groove concentric to t said plate, said groove being provided with an inner vertical wall and an outer obliquelyflared wall, a series'of perforations through said plate opening into the bottom of said groove, a cut-oft` cap resting in close faclal contact with said plate so asfto overlie the outer wall of said groove and provided with a radial slot extending from the center outward, and a set-screw adapted to enter said slot and screw into a central perforation provided therefor 'in said top plate, whereby the spray may be out off from a part or all of said perforations, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as niy own I have hereto afxed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
