TEA-KETTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,761, dated June 23, 1896. Application filed March 9,1896. Serial No. 582,425. (No model.)

' Be it known that I, ALONZO W. CRAM, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TeaKettles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention pertains to improvements in tea-kettles, and its object is to provide a kettle-cover of improved form; also an improved water-indicator.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompauying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a tea-kettle provided with my improved cover and indicator, the latter in solid lines being in position when the water is high in the kettle and in dotted lines when low. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the cover and swinging lid, the parts being detached.

A designates the kettle, and B the cover, the latter being stamped down from a single piece of sheet metal. The side wall of the cover has a slight downward taper whereby it is adapted to wedge tightly in the kettleopening, while surrounding the upper edge of the cover is the projecting flange O. The bottom of the cover slopes downward and inward toward its center, where it is formed with the filling-opening E. The valve-lid F serves to close this opening, the same swinging downward into the kettle, but held normally in a raised or closed position by the weighted arm- G. Loop H depends from the under side of to drain all the water from the upper side of the valve-lid into the kettle.

As before stated, the lid is normally closed, but in filling the kettle water is simply poured into cover B, which by its own weight depresses the valve-lid and thus runs into the body of the kettle, and the valve-lid then automatic ally closes.

For indicating the height of the water in the kettle I provide the indicator K, which is pivoted between its ends in a slotof the cover B, whereby it turns in a vertical arc. The inner end of this indicator which projects into the kettle supports the depending line L, to which float M is secured, and when the kettle is well filled the indicator will be relieved of the weight of the float and its normally heavier outer end will be depressed, while when the water is low in the kettle it will assume the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, as will be understood. The outer end of the indicator traverses scale 0, raised from cover B, which may be marked off in inches from its upper end downward, so that the pivoted indicator will indicate the number of inches of water contained in the kettle.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a kettle-cover hav in g a filling-opening, a centrally-depressed lid for said opening, the said lid in its center being formed with a drain-opening, and a whis tle arranged about the said opening, whereby a drain is provided for the said lid and a signal to indicate the condition of the water is also provided, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of a kettle, an indicator pivoted between its ends to swing vertically, with the inner end thereof projected into the kettle, and a float secured to the inner end of the indicator, substantially shown and described.

3. The combination of the kettlecover, the indicator extended through a slot formed therein and pivoted to swing vertically with one end projected into the kettle, the float secured to the inner end of the indicator, and a scale raised vertically from the cover and adapted to be traversed by the indicator, substantially as shown and described.
