To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY A. VOLKENRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iuntington, in the county of Cabell and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests for Sewing-Machines5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact def scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to` certain new an useful improvements in foot-rests for sewingmachines, and it hasfor its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap device for the use of those working on the sewing- Inachine, at the time they are basting to prepare for sewing, so that the operators may rest their feet upon it.

It has for a further obj ect to provide a simple attachment readily applied tomachines now in use, as well as to new machines about y to be manufactured.

The device is so constructed that when not in use it can be turned up out of the way of the operator.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification7 and in which- Figure l is a perspective'view of my improved foot-rest with the supporting part of the sewing-machine broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the foot-rest in its horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section with the foot-rest in the position seen in Fig. 2, the section being taken above the same.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a portion of the supporting-frame of a sewing-machine table, to which are attached the lugs B or clamps of any suitable construction, rendered detachable by the adjusting screws and nuts b, and

these clamps or lugs lhave the tubular por-` tions C ofgbendable material, adapted to receive the ends of the shaft D, which are inserted therein,`so that the shaft may revolve, and the upper ends of the bearings bend inward, so as to prevent displacement of the shaft. This shaft has fast thereon the arms E, to which is secured in any suitable manner the foot-rest F, the arms being extended at one end beyond the foot-rest and adapted to engage the stops G, extending inwardly from the opposite portions of the frame of the supporting-table.

Normally the foot-rest will be thrown up, as indicated in Fig. l, where it is out ofthe way of the operator. When not running the machine and the operator desires to rest her foot, as when basting the material ready to sew, the foot-rest is thrown down into the horizontal position in which itis seen in Fig.. 2 by simply touchin g it with the foot, and as'it is thrown into such position the extending ends of the arms on the under side of the footrest coming in contact with the inwardly-extending stops on the frame of the table serve to stop it in proper position and also to aid it in sustaining the weight of the foot.

Modifications in detail maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacricing any of its advantages. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isf- The combination with the supporting frame, of a table or the like, of lugs secured thereto, formed with bendable portions forming bearings for a shaft, a shaft mounted in said bearings, arms fast upon said shaft at right angles thereto, and a foot-rest supported upon said arms and extended at one end beyond the same, and stops extended inwardly from the opposite portions of the supportingframe to be engaged by the inner ends of said arms which are extended beyond the foot-rest.
