Description

NITED STATES WILLIAM MANNING, OF CHELMSFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-CAKE MACHINES.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 56,24] dated July '10, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM MANNING, of Chelmsford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, lliave invented new and useful Improvements in a Machine for Indenting and Finishing Corn-Cakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a former to receive the parched, pulverized, prepared corn, to be operated on the table with any number of knives, for the purpose ofindenting and finishing the corn-sheet in any number of squares, as required.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed t0 describe its construction and operation.
Figure l represents a plan of my improved machine for inden tin g an d nishin g corn -cakes.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section through A and B of Fig. l. Fig. 4L represents a plan of the former with a tnished corn-cake, as required.
a represents the table; b, the stock; c, the knives; d, the springs; e, the seltadjusting clearers or hoot's; ff, the slides; g g, the guides; la, the joint; i, the lever; jj, the stoppin; kk, the former-guides; l, the former, and m the nished corn-cake.
The former l being lled with prepared corn and swept oft even with the top of the sides,
it is then placed on the table a, adjusted in position by the guides 7c k, and moved back to the pins j j. Then the operator presses down the lever z', which operates on the joint h and depresses the slides f and stock b, the guides g keeping them in their vertical position, carry ing down the knives c and the seltadjusting clearers or hoofs e, the hoofs e coming in contact with the corn-cake m rst receiving the pressure from the springs d. The knives o are inserted sufficiently for the required indenture, then removed by the action of the lever t. The hoofs e serve to keep the edges ot the indentures perfect and unbroken. Then the former l is removed from the table a and turned onequarter around, and then placed back on the table a to the pins jj. By the saine operation of the operator the indentures are made at right angles with the former ones.. The cake is then finished and ready to be removed.
VWhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The stationary knives c and. adjustable clearers or hoofs e, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The former l, in combination with the adjustable clearers or hoofs e and knives c, for the purpose specified and in the manner set forth.
