ELIZABETH GLADWIN BOUTON, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
ORANGE-PU LP REMOVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,372, dated June 23, 1896. i Application filed .Tune 6, 1895. Serial No. 551,831. (No model.) i
T all whom it may concern.-
BOUTON, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Pittsfield, countyof Berkshire,
`and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orange-Pulp Removers, of which the following thereof, showing also the method of connect-` is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indi-` cate corresponding parts.
My inventionrelates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for extracting the pulp from oranges and other fruit; and its object is to provide a simple, effective, and inexpensive device by means of which the pulp of an orange may be entirely removed from the skin, and finally divided or separated. y y
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of the annular base-plate adapted to be placed upon a cup or other receptacle, and a semispherical body mounted upon said base-plate, and providedwith a number of vertical slits or slots forming wings, the edges of which are sharp and adapted to y cut the pulp of theorange.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved device; and Fig. 2 is atransverse section ing the same with a cup or other vessel.
In the practice of my invention, I employ an annular base-plate A, providedwith an ant nular depending flange or rim a, and an upwardly-directed annular flange or rim c', and I also, preferably, employ a second annular depending flange or rim a2, which, in connection with the depending flange or rim a, forms an annular cavity adapted to receive the upper portion of a cup or other receptacle B. The annular plate A is also provided7 atits inner edge, with an upwardly-directed iiange O, between which and the outer edge of the plate, and preferably between the upwardlydirected flange O and the depending flange or rim a2, is formed a row of perforations or openings D. y
Mounted upon the annular base-plate A, and surrounding the flange C, is a substantially semispherical body D', which is provided with a series of vertical slits or slots E,
forming wings or plates F. These slits or slots E arecut diagonally with relation to the diameter ofthe semispherical body, so that the wings formed thereby are provided with sharp cutting edges and said wings also pro-` jectatan angle, as above described, `to the diameter of the semispherical body.`
In practiceanorange or other fruit is prefi erably cut in half and the pulp of each `part is removed by simply forcing the part down upon the spherical body and turning the partof the orange so that the cutting edges of the fwings will cut out the pulp from the skin, and
this operation is continued until all the pulp has been removed.
It will be observed that by this device the pulp is not only removed from the skin, but furthermore it is cut up and divided into iinely-separated particles which fall into the cup, or is collected around the base of the semispherical body, while the juice of the orange passes into the cup. t
The device maybe made of metal, glass, or
other desirable material and can also be constructed in various shapes which will all fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
ingwith the rim a an annular cavity, an upwardly-directed iiange C, said base A being provided with a row of perforations between the iianges a and C, a substantially semispherical body D mounted on the base surrounding the flange G, said body being pro- 8o Having thus fully described my invention,
vided with a series of vertical slits E, cut dit agonally with relation to the diameter of the body and forming overlapping wings F, the edges of said wings being sharp and within the circumferential plane of the body, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have lsigned my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this21st day of May, 1895.
ELIZABETH GLADWIN BOUTON.
