'- G. HAG'ELS TEIN.
' BOLT CUTTER,
No. 562,181. V Patented June 16, 1896.
4 i dd M g e '4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRIST HAGELSTEIN, OF PAINT ROCK, TEXAS.
BOLT-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of l'ietters Patent No. 562,181, dated June 16,1896.
Application filed November 4, 1895. Serial No. 567,872. (No model.)
To an whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRIST HAGELSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paint Rock, in the county of Ooncho and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a bolt-cutter; and it consists of a stationary cutter and two movable cutters operated by levers adapted to come in contact with the edge of the stationary cutter, with plates and bolts for securing the same together in proper position.
The purpose of the cutter is to trim bolts after the nuts have been screwed home, that is, to cut off the end of the bolt close to the upper face of the nut.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom view of my invention, handles closed. Fig. 2 is a top view of my invention, handles closed. Fig. 3 is a top view of my invention with the top plate I) removed. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are detail views.
My invention is described as follows:
a is the bottom plate having a rectangular opening a. b is the top plate having an oblong opening I). c is the center plate provided with circular depressions c c on its front face and a depression 0 in its rear face, (shown by the dotted lines 9,) in which the knife 0 is secured. The knife (2 is provided with a cnttin g edge 0 d are lever-arms having circular joints 61, adapted to work in circular depressions c of plate a. Said levers have, integral with them and said circular joints, knives 01 having edges d, which impinge against and cooperate with the edge 0 of the knife 0 and thus cut off the end of the bolt.
Plates a b c and circular joint d are all provided with concentric bolt-holes e, and plates to b c and knife 0 are also provided with concentric bolt-holes e. Said plates, knife and levers are secured together by bolts 6 In operation the levers are opened, as shown in Fig. 3, the plate a is slipped down over the nut which comes partly up through the openin g a, and then the levers are brought together and the bolt f,'Fig. 3, is cut off by the knives c and (1 above the nut.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the plate a, provided with the rectangular opening a, and boltholes e and 6'; plate I), provided with the oblong opening b,and bolt-holes, concentric with bolt-holes e and e, of plate a; plate 0, provided with circular depressions c, o, 0 and bolt-holes concentric with bolt-holes e and e, of plate a; knife 0 adapted to fit in the depression c of the plate 0; and having boltholes concentric with bolt-holes e, of plate a; levers d, provided with circular joints (1, adapted to work in depressions c, and having each a bolt-hole concentric with bolt-holes of plate 0, and knives 01 the edges of which are adapted to impinge against the edge of knife 0 all the parts secured together by bolts and nuts 6 substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the plate 0, provided with an opening a; plate I), provided with an opening 1); plate 0, provided with j oint-sockets, c, andaknife-socket c knife, 0 adapted to fit in the socket 0 levers (1, provided with joints to correspond with the sockets of the plate 0; and knives to cooperate with knife 0 all being hinged and held together by bolts or other equivalent, means, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRIST HAGELSTEIN.
