Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDK. HANDSOHUH, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CHAIR'AND FAN.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,214, dated July 107 1866.
To all whom it may concer/n,.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HAND- SCHUH, of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bocking-Ohairs with Fan Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a rockingchair constructed in any of the known and usual ways. a; represents a shaft which passes across the chair immediately over the rockers, with its ends confined to the hind legs of the chair. B and O represent levers, through which the shai'tm passes and acts a fulcrum. Upon one end of each of these' levers is a spring, and upon the ends of the springs are rollers a a. These rollers rest upon the floor, and serve to operate the levers as the chair rocks backward and forward. Hooks or eyes are formed upon the other ends ofthe levers, in which cords D and E are secured. These cords pass over or against pulleys, which are properly secured in holders or keepers at the back ofthe chair-seat.
F represents a curved rod, which is pivoted to a small shaft, o. 'The lower end of shaft c slides into a box, Grmade to receive it, and is stationed in said box by means of a setscrew, i. The box Gr is secured in a vertical position to the upper cross-piece, which connects the uprights H of the chair-back.
`Upon each side of the rod F, and upon the same pivot which secures it to the shaft c, are two small pulleys, over which the cords D and E pass.
Upon top of the rod F, and near its center,
are keepers, in which are pivoted two pulleys,
d, over which the cords D and E also pass.
To the forward end of rod F is secured a fanshaft, upon which is secured permanently two or more fans, I I. This fan-shaft is provided at its center with a pulley, over which the cords D and E pass, said cords being united at this point so as to form one cord, or the continuation of one and the same cord.
When the rockingchair is set in motion, rocking backward and forward, the levers B and O are operated by the springs and their rollers, and said levers operate upon the cords so that'they set the fan inmotion,` and keep it partially, or rotating as long as the rocking motion of the chair vis continued.
K represents a jointed bar, one end of which is secured to the cross-piece connecting the uprights H H. The upper portion Iof this bar is provided with a series of openings,in which the end of the rod F will t. The object of this bar K is to conne the rear end of the rod F in such a manner that its forward end, which sustains the fans, can be adjusted to suit the height of the person using the fans in the chair.
L is a cord which passes over the forward end ot rod F, having its ends confined to the chair-arms, and is for the purpose of coniining this (the forward) end of the rod down.
M is a rod with links attached to its ends, which catch under the levers B O, to keep them in position when the chair is moved. This cord runs through an eye in the bottom of the chair.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. The levers B and O, as constructed, the cords D and E, and the rod F, with fan attached, the several parts being combined and used as and for the purpose specified.
2. rllhe bar K and the shaft c, when used with the rod F, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in presence of witnesses.
Allentown, June 6, 1866.
F. HANDSGHUH.
Witnesses E. J. ALDE, 0. D. HANKE.
