TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 561 ,928, dated June 9, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES R. VAIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ensley, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is directed to improvements in devices for temporarily binding together a number of sheets in book form, and has for its object the provision of a simply-constructed,
- efficient, and durable means by which the sheets may be assembled singly or in bulk, and afterward removed with the minimum of time and labor, and by which also the sheets when assembled are held against accidental detachment and are permitted a range of movement at the attached edge sufficient to afford easy access to the entire surface of the page for writing or other purposes.
The invention, by reason of the construction embodied, is applicable for use in connection with any of the devices now employed to serve as a backing, cover, or closure for temporarily assembled sheets, and while I have shown my invention as applied to and formin g part of a book form of holder I do not wish it understood that I confine myself to such application.
The nature of my invention will become clearly apparentfrom a reading of the following des'cription,when taken in connection with accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved binding device applied to a book form of holder, a number of sheets being in place. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view, partly broken away, of my improved binding device. Fig.
3 is a sectional view on line a; a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line y y of Fig. 2.
Referring to the said drawings by letter, A denotes a metallic strip which forms the backing of my improved binding device, said strip being provided with side flanges a, and b is a second strip which is secured to the backingstrip by the flanges on the latter and by rivets c c, as shown.
At 2) b the strip 5 is perforated, said perforations being in pairs and located on opposite sides of the strip, each pair of perforations being in transverse alinement and adapted to receive the ends cl d of one of a number of staples (Z employed to hold the sheets in place. The staple ends in practice are passed through the perforations and rest against the strip A, and at d d are provided recesses which are engaged by a slidable locking-plate e, interposed between the strips and provided with a fin ger-hold e, projecting through a slot b in the strip b. The locking-plate is recessed at c 2 said recesses serving, when moved into alinement with the perforations Z), to free the staples, and when moved out of register the edges of the plate are caused to engage the recesses and lockthe staples in place.
I employ in connection with my improved binding device sheets previously perforated at the proper points, the perforated portion of the sheet being strengthened by a strip of cloth or other suitable material.
In the operation of my invention, supposing the staples to be locked in place, the lockingplate is slid forward through engagement with the exposed finger-hold e, and all of the staples are thereby unlocked or released. Said staples are then removed and passed through the perforations in the sheets, after which the ends are caused to reenter the perforations in the strip Z), and the plate being slid backward the locking of the staples to place is effected.
The device, as will be clearly seen, is simple in construction, may be cheaply produced, and is not liable to disorder, being constructed with a view to durability. The sheets may, by my invention, be quickly inserted and removed, and when assembled are not liable of disconnection with ordinary use.
Various modifications both in the manner of construction and application of my improved device may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, as if desired I may construct the parts in a 1nanner to permit adjustments to suit the size or number of sheets to be assembled, and in ranged between said strips and having a finger-hold proj eeting through the slot, and side reeessesadapted to be moved into and out of register with the perforations, and a number of staples having recessed ends adapted to be inserted in said perforations and to be locked or released by the movement of the plate.
