Description
A. R. BAKER, Decdf G. BAKER, Administram'x. LABEL FOR FILE BINDERS.
115. 515,512. Patnted'Peb. 27, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT R. BAKER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA; META C. BAKERADMINIS- TRATRIX OF SAID ALBERT R. BAKER, DECEASED.
LABEL FOR FILE-BINDERS.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,512, dated February 27, 1894.
Application filed May 25, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT R. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a newand useful Improvem ent inLabels forFile-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
It is customary upon the part of users of temporary binders for orders, letters or other papers of the general character shown in Letters Patent to John F. Brown, No. 399,737, dated March 19, 1889, when the same have been filled, to file them away upon shelves as ordinary books are disposed in the library case. But this description of binder provides no suitable surface at the end whereby the file may be labeled or indexed. And my present invention is intended to supply this want.
The nature of my improvement is fully set forth below and shown in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure l is an elevation of a Brown or similar binder filled with papers, and provided with my label. Fig. 2 is a partial section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the inner side of the label, in perspective. I
In the drawings a d represent the covers of the binder whichareproperlysecuredtogether by means not necessary to an understanding of this invention and, therefore, not illustrated.
b represents the papers contained in the binder and clasped between the covers.
The label which forms the subject of this invention consists, preferably, of two layers 0 d of pasteboard and an envelope or cover e of cloth, leather, leatherette, or strong paper adapted to be written or printed upon. The pasteboard gives the device rigidity and compels it 'to retain its flat form, so that the edges do not need to be secured in any way to pre- Serial No. 434,288. (No specimens.)
vent warping. For the purpose of securing the label to the bound papers I provide it with tangs f, which are formed of strips of sheet metal bent into T-form with the head of the T placed between the layers of pasteboard and the stem projecting rearwardly through one of the layers. The stem is punctured so as to form spurs g which are bent outwardly, to a limited extent, as shown. These tangs project rearwardly from the center of the device and are pushed in between the papers of the file, and the spurs tend to prevent their withdrawal. The heads of the tangs being secured between the layers of pasteboard render the tangs quite firm, and support the latter at both sides. With this construction of label and attaching devices, the label may be secured wherever desired in the file and will retain its shape and position upon the file as long as desired. It may also be removed if necessary without serious damage to the contents of the file.
I claimk 1. As a new article of manufacture, the flat rigid label for file binders, consisting of inner stiffening boards, metal tangs secured in the boards and the envelope or cover, substantially as specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the flat rigid label for file binders, consisting of the layers of paste board, the projecting tang, the head whereof is secured between the pasteboard layers, and the inclosing envelope, substantially as specified.
3. As a new article of manufacture, the fiat rigid label for file binders consisting of the pasteboards c d, the envelope 9 and tangs f, substantially as specified.
ALBERT R. BAKER.
itnesses:
LEW. E. CURTIS, H. M. MUNDAY.
