TROUSERS-STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,863, dated June 9, 1896.

Application filed April 28, 1896.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Stretchin g Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for stretching trousers; and it has for its object to provide a simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive device adapted to stretch without undue straining and capable of being folded with the trousers stretched thereon for packing in a valise or trunk or for storage; and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, Figure l is a plan view showing my improved stretching device with the trousers indicated in dotted lines as stretched in proper position thereon; Fig. a side view of the same with the parts partly folded, and Fig. 3 a side elevation showing the device folded.

A represents what may be termed the frame of the device and consists of the two side bars a, rigidly held together by the fiat bar 5 at one end and by the round bar or rod 6 at the other end, forming a rectangle. The bar I) is preferably arrange-d :liatwise between the bars a, so as to permit of the latter extending above the upper surface of the said bar l1, and on the bar I) is hinged one end of a bar (3, so as to fold closely down on said bar 1), and which extends across from side to side of said frame and may be secured at its free end to said bar 12 by a thumb-screw or bolt 6, having a vertically-flattened head, which is screwed into or is otherwise adjustably secured in the bar Z), and whose head is adapted to pass through a slot f, formed in the end of bar d, and to secure said bar d rigidly in place when turned crosswise of said slot.

To the bar 0 at each side of the frame is attached one end of the metal rods B by simply bonding the ends of the same in grooves Serial No. 589,377. (No model.)

g, formed in the bar, so as to permit of said rods being turned thereon, and at their opposite ends said rods are likewise secured in grooves in a bar or roller C. To the ends of the bar or roller C, and preferablyoutside of the ends of rods B, the ends of similar metal rods D are secured by bending into grooves h, and the other ends of said rods D are secured in a similar manner in grooves i, formed in the ends of a bar or roller E, to which are also secured in grooves 7o therein the metal rods F, the other ends of which are secured to a bar G. The bars or rollers C E G, with the rods B D F, form an extensionframe which is, as described above, connected through the bar 0 to the main frame A. To the bar G clasps H are secured or connected by means of elastic cords or straps I. The clasps shown are held together by a springand are provided with corrugated rubber strips Z, secured to the jaws in order to enable the jaws to take a firm hold on the trousers without tearing or penetrating the same, and the elastic cord is passed through the spring and knotted over or secured to the bar G. It is evident, however, that any suitable form of clasp may be employed instead of the one shown and that said clasps may be secured to the bar G by means of coiled or spiral springs with equally good results, and therefore I do not desire to be limited to the form of clasp nor the manner of securing the same to the bar.

To stretch trousers by my improved device, the same is arranged in the position shown in Fig. 2 and the bottom of the trousers laid on bar 1) and the hinged bar (I brought down thereon and firmly secured by the thumbscrew orbolt e. The trousers are then passed under bar 0 and over roller C and under the next roller E and the clasps caught on the waist of the trousers. The rollers are then pressed down, thus straightening the device out to the position shown in Fig. 1, thereby stretching the trousers.

The device maybe hung up with the trousers stretched thereon, or, if desired, the device may be folded into the position shown in Fig. 3, in which event the trousers will still remain stretched, since they pass alternately over and under the rollers and the pressure is retained thereon.
