S H O E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,645, dated June 9, 1896. Application filed December 26, 1895. Serial No. 573,816. (No model.)

lie it known that L'ALEXANDER M. 130L- LINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Villiamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Shoe, of which the follo wing is a specification.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide a one-piece shoe which will be graceful in appearance, afford ease and comfort to the wearer, and which can be easily manufactured and will fit closelyto anormally-shaped foot and conform to the outline thereof.

\Vith these and such other ends in view as pertain to the nature of the invention, the latter consists of certain details in the formation of the pattern or blank from which the upper is constructed, and which hereinafter will more fully appear and be claimed, reference being had for a full disclosure thereof to the followingdescription and the drawings hereto attached, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a Congress gaiter formed from a blank cut in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 shows the pattern or blank from which the upper is fashioned. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the blank partially folded. Fig. i is a detail View of the upper after the parts have been properly positioned and stitched and prior to the application of the elastic gussets.

The same numerals of reference denote similar and corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The pattern or blank is oblong and approximately elliptical in shape and comprises the vamp l at one end, the top or front 2 at the opposite end, the counter-stiffener 3 at one side and intermediate of the vamp and top 2, and the back i at the opposite side and located between the said vamp and top. A space 5 extends inward from the upper edge of the back -l; and is intended to receive an elastic gusset 6. A space 7, corresponding to the space 5, projects inward from the top edge of the back i and is extended longitudinally at its inner end andcontractcd at its outer end, approximating in outline an L form. This L-shaped space comes above the vamp, and its edges conform to the bottom edge and sides of the top or front 2, so as to admit of the lat ter being stitchedto the edge portion of the vamp bordering upon the said space 7. The counter-stiffener 3, the top or front 2, and the back 4 are separated, as indicated by the full lines, and the top 2 is crimped along the dotted line, and the Vamp, counter-stiffener, and back folded along the dotted lines. A slit 8 extends inward from the rear edge of the back at for a short distance and is designed to receive the rear end of the vamp adjacent to the counter-stiifener 3,, so that the latter may come within the back it when shaping the upper prior to the stitching thereof. This slit 8 is essential inasmuch as it also provides for the overlapping of the top edge of the vamp upon the top or front 2, whereby a neat and graceful finish is attained. hen the blank or pattern is properly folded to form the upper, the outer edge or side of the top or front 2 forms with the adjacent edge of the back i a space corresponding to the opening 5, and which in the completed shoe is supplied with a gusset 6.

After the blank or pattern is folded and stitched, as shown in Fig. a, it is lined, pro vided with elastic gussets, soled, heeled, and otherwise finished to provide a marketable shoe, substantially as illustrated in Fig. l.

The spaces 5 and 7 are formed upon opposite sides of a line passing centrally through the back a and at right angles to the length of the blank, forming a projection 9,whose ed gcs 1O incline slightly in opposite directions and form the rear sides of the gusset-spaces.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A shoe constructed from single blank having the form substantially as shown, and comprising a vamp at one end, a part at the opposite end which is stitched to the vamp and forms the front, a side part folding and providing the counter-stiifener, and an opposite side part having spaces on opposite sides of a line passing centrally through the back to receive the gussets and forming the back and quarters, and having a slit to admit of the upper edge of the vamp overlapping the lower edge of the front, substantially as set forth.

2. A shoe or Congress gaiter constructed from a single oblong blank having the form substantially as set forth, and comprising a Vamp at one end, a part at the opposite end forming the front and stitched to the vamp,

a side' part folding and forming the counterstilfener, and an opposite side part forming the back and quarters and having spaces upon opposite sides of a middle line of the back to 5 receive the elastic gussets, and having an inwardly-extending slit to receive that end of the vamp adjacent to the counter-stiffener,

whereby the latter will come Within the back and the upper edge of the vamp Will overlap 10 the lower edge of the top, the shoe being finished in the ordinary way, substantially as specified.
