NECKTlE-RETAINING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,549, dated June 2, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that 1, Louis WnIsHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Necktie Retaining Devices; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in retaining devices for neckties,

and relates more particularly to devices for holding in position the end of the neckband of a necktie which passes around the neck of the wearer to hold the tie in place.

My said invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is an inner elevation of a necktie provided with my improved retaining device. Fig. 2 is aview of the retaining device ready for application to the tie. Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating a slightly different form of device.

B designates the upper part or body of the tie, and O the neckband provided with the stiffened or reinforced end a.

The neckband O is secured at one end in the ordinary manner to one side of the upper part or body B, and the other side of said part B is made open for the insertion of the stiffened or reinforced end a of said neckband.

The tie may be made in all its parts precisely as has been heretofore common, my invention having no relation whatever to the construction of the tie proper.

My improved retaining device consists of a suitable metallic clip D, which is bifurcated at its lower end so as to form downwardly-diverging arms E, and adapted at its upper end to be secured in any desired or convenient manner to the body part B of the tie.

As shown in the drawings, the clip I) may readily be made by stamping the same from sheet metal, and in practice I find it eonvenient either to provide upon said metal piece two or more sharp points d (Z, adapted to be passed through the goods forming the tie and clenching or bending against the inner surface thereof, as in Fig. 1, or to provide said piece with apertures d d by means of which it may be stitched in position upon the tie. If desired, both the points d cl and the stitching-holes d d may be employed.

In applying my improved device to a necktie the upper end of the clip D is placed within the lower part of the passage in the body B for the end of the band C, so as to permit the bifurcated lower end of said clip to project below the lower end of said passage, as shown in Fig. 1. The clip is then secured in position either by means of the points d d or by stitching, orboth, and the device is then ready for use.

In using the tie the neckband is adjusted about the neck of the wearer in the usual manner, and the end 0 thereof passed downwardly through the opening or passage in the body B, when the end of said neckband is pulled between the arms E E of the clip and by a slight upward pull upon the band O the lower part thereof is firmly engaged between said arms E E. In this position of the device the neckband will be firmly held against displacement, and the tie thereby satisfactorily retained in position. a I

In order to free the neckband and permit the tie to be removed, it is only necessary to pull downwardly upon the lower end of the neckband sufficiently to withdraw the same from between the arms E E, when the band may be readily withdrawn from the body B.

If desired, a supplemental retaining device may be provided by forming a point or pin F between the upper ends of the arms E E, which pin or point may be engaged with the neckband in an obvious manner when said band is in position between said arms.

By my improvement I am enabled to provide a very simple and efficient form of re taining device for neckties, which is capable of securely holding the neckband of the tie in position when in engagement therewith, but which at all other times will leave the gitudinally.

Retaining devices for this purpose as here-' tofore constructed have been formed from pins secured to the upper or body portions of the ties and adapted to be inserted in or through the neckband to retain the same; but a serious objection to the use of said pins has been that they are very liable to get out of place and are furthermore very liable to catch upon the neckbands in such a manner as to prevent the withdrawal of the bands from the body part when it is desired to remove the tie. With my improvement this objection is entirely overcome.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. The combination with a necktie provided with a neckband and with apassage or opening through the body part of the tie for the reception of said neckband, of a retaining device consisting of a metallic plate secured at its upper end within the lower part of said passage or opening, and provided in its lower end with a longitudinal tapered slot or opening extending upward to a point near the upper end of the plate, and in line with the passage or opening in the body of the necktie, and the bifurcated lower end of said plate ex tending below the lower end of said passage or opening, whereby the neckband may be readily engaged within said tapered slot or opening, by an upward pull thereon, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a necktie provided with a neckband and with a passage or openin g through the body portion of the tie for the reception of said neckband, of a retaining device consisting of a metallic plate provided with a tapered longitudinal slot or opening
