SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,401, dated June 2, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J ERNBERG, a citi zen of the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tem perature-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, efficient, and durable form of temperature-regulating device; and the especial object of my invention is to provide a hot-water circulatory system and a temperature-regu lating device which is especially applicable to incubators.
To these ends my invention consists of the parts and combinations of parts,as hereinafter described,and m ore particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an incubator constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawings and in detail, A designates the outside casing or shell of an incubator, and B designatesthe egg-chamber.
Fastened upon and carried by a bracket 10 at one end of the incubator I provide a water heater 0. The heater 0 is substantially cy' lindrical in form and is provided with a central flue 11, having fou r perpendicular branch or heating lines 12. Connected with the central flue 11 below the bodyof the heater C is an exhaust-flue 13. Heat may be supplied to these flues by means of an ordinary lamp D or other suitable heating device.
The heated water from the top of the heater- C flows through the supply-pipe 14c, and the water as it is cooled is returned to the bottom of the heater 0 through a return-pipe, as 15.
pivotal] y supported in a bracket 23 by means of center-screws 24, and in order to control and regulate the motion of the parts I may provide the lever 22 with an adjustable counterweight 26, and the bracket 23 maybe provided with adjustable stops 25, as shown. At its opposite end the lever 22 is connected to a perforated vertically-movable damper F by means of a rod 27.
The damper F is mounted in the central flue 11 and is provided near its upper end with a series of perforations corresponding with the heating'flues 12. lVhen in its lowest position, the damper F will extend down so as to cut off the exhaust-flue 13, causing the heat to pass through the vertical heating-flues 12. When the damper F is raised, the heatingflues 12 will be cut oil from the central flue 11 and the heat will be deflected through the exhaust-flue 13.
The operation of my improved temperatureregulating device may be briefly described as follows: Then the temperature rises above the desired point, the water in the circulatory system will expand, and the weight of the water in the movable vessel E increasing the vessel E will move downward and through its connections will raise the damper F, thus deflecting the heat from the fiues 12 into the exhaust-flue 13, allowing the temperature of the water in the circulatory system to fall. hen the water again becomes cooler and contracts, the weight of water in the movable' vessel E will decrease, the damper F will fall, and the heat will again be allowed to 'pass through the heating-fines 12.
In some cases, in order to prevent the evaporation of the water contained in the circula- 'tory system, the top of the pipe 16 and of the movable vessel E may be closed, and where this construction is adopted a puppet-valve or other safety device for preventing abnormal pressures should be provided.
I am aware that other changes in the construction of the device may be made by those who are skilled in the art, and I do not wish, therefore, to be limited to the construction which I have shown and described; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination of an incubator, ahotwater circulatorysystem comprising circulating-passages, a hot-Water heater having an exhaust-fine, a supply-flue, and heating-fines flues, said damper being arranged to positively cut off said heating-flues when in its elevated position, and means controlled by the eXpansion of the water in the circulatory system for automatically operating said damper, substantially as described.
