CORSET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,720, dated May 26, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. HUNTING, of WVeedsport, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in corsets 3 and it consists in an open corset-back, provided at each edge of the opening with notches, which divide the edges into sections, combined with sectional stays, a separate lacing for each section, and a long stay for each edge, the said long stays being secured at their lower ends only to the corset and kept in position at their upper ends by suitable keepers, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to divide the rear edges of the back of the corset into three separate sections, each of which sections has a free lateral adjustment of its own, whereby the corset may be let out or drawn in at either the top, bottom, or central portion independently of the others, as the figure may require.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of the back, taken from opposite sides.

A represents the back of a corset, which has both of its edges provided with the notches B of any desired depth and which serve not only to divide the back into three separate sections, but to separate the three short pairs of steels 0 from each other. Instead of having one continuous steel for each edge three short ones are here used, which are separated any suitable distance at their ends by the notches, so that each section of the back will have a free lateral adjustment of its own independently of the other or others. For each section of the back a separate lacing D is provided, so that each section can be let out or taken up, as the figure may require. As each edge of the back is divided into three short sections, the stays 0 will not alone give the necessary support to theback, and hence to obtain this necessary support separate stays G, of suitable width and length, are provided upon the inner edges of the back, and these stays are secured at their lower ends only to the corset. At any suitable distance from the top of the corset are secured the flexible keepers I, through which the upper ends of the stays G are passed, and which retain the upper ends of the stays in position, while the different sections of the back are left free to give in, accommodating themselves to the figure. Extending the whole vertical length of the back outside of the eyelets J are two or more cords O, which take the place of the other steels which are generally used. As the back shortens and lengthens with the dilferent positions the wearer assumes the upper ends of the stays move freely through their keepers or loops, and thus these stays are prevented from making the back stiff, but allow it to yield to the different positions of the wearer.

By the construction here shown and described, if the wearer has broad shoulders or hips, or both, and a small waist, the upper and lower portions of the corset can be let out to any desired degree, while the waist remains the same; or, if she has narrow shoulders and a large waist and hips, the upper portion of the corset can be contracted and the central and lower portions let out to any desired degree; or, if she has wide shoulders and narrow hips and small waist, the corset can be regulated accordingly.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. An open-back corset, provided at each edge of the opening with notches which divide the edges into sections, combined with the sectional stays, substantially as shown.

2. An open-back corset, provided at each edge of the opening with notches which divide the edges into sections, combined with the sectional stays, and a separate lacing for each section, substantially as described.

3. An open-back corset provided at each edge of the opening with notches which divide the edges into sections, sectional stays, and a lacing for each section, combined with the long stays which extend up the back along each edge, and which are connected to the corset at their lower edges only, and keepers for retaining the upper ends of the long stays in position, substantially as set forth.
