SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,607, dated May 19, 1896. Application filed January 8, 1896. Serial No. 574,74A. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JESSE L. \VILSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a novel toy having a revoluble hopper to contain a plural number of tops, the object being to make provision whereby upon turning the hopper a number.

The letter A designates a base of suitable construction adapted to set on a table or on the floor. At the top the base has an upwardprojecting fixed spindle 6, around which the hopper O revolves. The hopper at its bottom has a spool-neck cl, which is bored or tubular and fits down and around the said spindle Z). The spool-neck has a flange e, and the portion above the flange serves for winding a cord f, by pulling which the hopper is revolved. The fixed spindle b is tubular, and its upper end has a small flange b, which engages a shoulder in the base of the hopper and loosely confines the latter in place, but permitting it to revolve. is round or cylindric and is to contain a number of tops These tops have the shape of squatty conical disks, with a point 9', on which they revolve. The upper surfaces of the disk tops are hollow or dishing. As will be seen, a number of these tops are placed in the hopper, one upon the other, and nesting together. A disk-lifter rod h has position in the fixed tubular spindle b and is vertically movable therein. The upper end of this rod takes against the point g on the lowermost disk top. This rod normally has its lower end h projectin g downward below the tubular spindle, and

The hopper in the present instance" this lower end is accessible to a persons finger, whereby the rod may be moved upward and all the disk tops in the hopper raised.

To operate the toy, all the disk tops, to the number of eight in the present instance, are placed in the hopper, as shown, and the cord is Wound around the spool-neck cl. With one hand the operator holds the base firmly to the 5 5 table or floor and with the other hand pulls the cord, which causes the hopper and all the disk tops therein to revolve. While the hopper is revolving the lifter-rod h is raised, and thereby the disks are lifted free of the hopper and at once fly off laterally and commence to spin on the floor or table. To add to the effect, the upper surface of the different disk tops may be variously colored, each one in a different manner.. Thus a number of tops are all set in motion at one operation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. A toy comprising a revoluble hopper; a

plural number of disk tops to fit in said hopper, and a lifter-rod to raise the said disk tops so they be free of the hopper.

2. A toy comprising a revoluble hopper having a spool-n eck with a bore; a hollow spindle 7 5 to fit in said bore; a plural number of disk tops to fit in said hopper, and a lifter-rod to raise the said disk tops so they be free of the hopper. p

3. A toy having in combination, a base pro- 8o vided with a fixed upward-projecting hollow spindle; a hopper having at its bottom a bored neck to fit on and revolve about said spindle;

a number of disk tops to fit in said hopper, and a lifter-rod having position in said hollow 8 5 spindle and vertically movable therein to raise the said disk tops while the hopper is revolving.
