COMBINED SUSPENDERS AND SHOULDER-BRACES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 560,276, dated May 19, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that 1, GEORGE R. McCoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osceola, in the county of Polk and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Suspenders and Shoulder-Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventin,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in suspenders of that class or style combining the utility of the ordinary suspenders and the service of a shoulder-brace and back-support; and the object is to provide a combined suspender and shoulder-brace which is simple and durable in construction and automatically adjustable on the body to the move ments thereof.

I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, formin g a part of this specification, and wherein Figure 1 is a view of a complete set of my improved suspenders and shoulder braces somewhat extended to fully show the construction. Fig. 2 is a back view of the invention as applied to a person. Fig. 3 is a detail of the shoulder-piece removed from its position on the shoulder-strap, the covering partly broken away lengthwise to show the metal plate.

A A designate the shoulder straps or pieces composed of any suitable material adapted to the purpose, such as soft and pliable leather, or a strong textile material. The middle of the shoulder-straps is made rounded for a proper distance, as at 1, to adapt that portion to sit easily, properly, and comfortably under the arms of the wearer. From the terminations of the rounded portion 1 the shoulderstraps are flat and the rear or lower ends formed with loops or eyes 2, through which the rounded portions of the back-straps are arranged to slide therein, and to the upper ends of the shoulder-straps are secured suitable buckles 3, to which the ends of the backstraps are connected substantially as shown and as will be hereinafter more fully specified. Adjacent to the upper end of each shoulder-piece is secured one end of an adjusting-strap 4, the lower and other end beposed of some suitable yielding material,

rounded in contour and longitudinally strengthened and preserved in conformation by a metal plate 6, sn it-ably curved and formed to fit easily on the shoulder and secured between the material, substantially as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The pads B B are adjustably secured to the shoulder-straps by means of buttons or headed studs 7 taking in buttonholes '7 in the shoulder straps. These pads give a large bearing to the shoulder-straps on the shoulders and also build up the shoulders beneath the shoulders of the outer clothing. Adjacent to the middle of the rounded portions of each shoulder-strap is secured a strap 8, which adjustably connects to a buckle 9, secured to a loop or eye 10, slidingly arranged on the button straps or cords, substantially as shown.

C O designate the back-straps, of any suitable material, slidingly interlaced and crossed to lie in the opposite directions, substantially as shown, and having suitably connected to their upper ends rounded straps 11 11 having flat end portions adj ustably connected to the buckles 3 on the shoulder-straps. The lower ends of the back-straps are formed with loops or eyes, through which the button-straps are slidingly arranged, as shown.

D D designate the button straps or cords, rounded to slide through the loops of the backstraps and the loops 10 of the straps of' the buckles 9, as shown, and having their respec tive ends formed with button-tabs 12 12 to be attached to the buttons on the trousers. On each button-strap is slidingly arranged a button-tab 13, disposed thereon between the connections to the shoulder-straps and the back-straps and adapted to button on the hipbuttons on the trousers.

My improved combined suspenders and shoulder-braces is applied to the wearer in the following-described manner: The arms are inserted through the shoulder-straps, and then these are adjusted to the shoulders by the straps at and buckles 5.

The button-straps and intermediate button-tabs are then connected to the trousers-buttons and further adjustments made by the straps 8 and the buckle connections at the upper ends of the rounded portions of the back-straps. Additional adjustments to suit the convenience and comfort of the wearer can be made while the body is in upright position by adjusting any of the buckle connections, which indicate the necessity to give an equal pull on all the parts.

It will be perceived by reference to the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings, that I provide a device for the purposes intended which, when applied to the person, will automatically adjust itself to the accommodations of the varied movements.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combined suspenders and shoulderbrace herein described, comprising shoulderstraps having rounded middle portions and flat end portions, adj Listing-straps connecting the adjacent end portions of the shoulderstraps, the crossed back-straps slidingly intersecting each other, the rounded straps connected to the upper ends of the back-straps and ad justably connected to the upper ends of the shoulder-straps, and slidingly connected to the lower ends thereof, the buttonstraps having button connections at their respective ends, and slidingly connected to the lower ends of the backstraps, adj ustingstraps having their upper ends secured to the rounded portions of the shoulder straps, buckles sliding on the button-straps and connecting with the straps on rounded portions of the shoulder-straps, and intermediate button-tabs sliding on the button-straps.

2. The combined suspenders and shoulderbrace herein described, comprising shoulderstraps having rounded middle portions and flat end portions, shoulder-pads adj ust-ably connected to the shoulder-straps, adj ustingstraps connecting the adjacent end portions of the shoulder-straps,the crossed back-straps slidingly intersecting each other, the rounded straps connected to the upper ends of the back-straps and adjustably connected to the upper ends of the shoulder-straps and slidin gly connected to the lower ends thereof, the button-straps having button connections at their respective ends, and slid in gly connected to the lower ends of the back-stra'ps, ad justingstraps having their upper ends secured to the rounded portions of the shoulder-straps, buckles sliding on the button-straps and connecting with the straps on rounded portions of the shoulder-straps, and intermediate bnt ton-tabs sliding on the button-straps.

' 3. In a combined suspcnder and shoulderbrace, the combination of the shoulder-straps provided with buttonholes,an d shoulder-pads comprising two pieces of suitable yicldin g material, metal plates secured between the pieces of the pads and longitudinally thereof, and buttons on the pads to button in the buttonholes of the shoulder-straps.
