To all whom it hwy concern:

Be it known that 1, ROBERT B. CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crayneville, in the county of Crittenden and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful flame-Hook, of which the following is a specification.

It frequently happens in harness used for hauling heavy loads that the hame-hooks break, and in the event of a repair-shop being distant considerable time is consumed in putting the harness in condition for effective service.

This invention aims to supply to the trade ahame-hook which can be readily removed and substituted by a new one, so all that is required of a teamster is to provide himself with one or more haine-hooks to replace a broken one in the event of one becoming disabled.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail view showing the inven tion applied. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the hame-hook, having the lock-plate detached. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lock-plate. Fig. is a detail view of the key or pin forsecuring the look-plate to the hame-hook. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the pivotal end of the hame-hook.

Corresponding and like parts are designated in the figures of the accompanying drawings and referred to in the following description by the same reference-characters.

The numeral 1 indicates asection of a harness-ha1ne provided with the usual staple 2, to which the hame-hook 3 is attached. The pivotal end of the hame-hook is bent to provide a fold i, which receives the staple 2 and terminates in a knuckle 5, through which is passed a pin or key 6 for securing the lockplate 7 in proper position.

In order to reinforce the pivotal end of the hame-hook and to provide the knuckle 5 in an economical way, the end portion of the plate or body from which the hame-hook is constructed is folded 0r doubled upon itself substantially as shown, the terminal portion being secured to the body by welding, riveting, or in any convenient way.

The lock-plate 7 is curved between its edges to approximate the fold 4., within which it is fitted, and its outer end is formed wit-l1 knuckles 8 to correspond with the knuckle 5, and through which the pin or key 6 passes to secure the lock-plate in place after being properly positioned. The purpose of the lockplate is to close the open side of the fold a and prevent the escape of the staple 2, thereby securing the hame-hook against accidental displacement after being properly applied to the harness-hame. In the event of the hamehook becoming broken or otherwise disabled the pin or key 6 is withdrawn, after which the lock-plate can be removed and the hame-hook disconnected from the staple 2, and a new hame-hook can be placed in position by fitting the fold 4 thereof to the staple 2 and securing the lock-plate in place by means of the pin or key. Inasmuch as the hame-hooks and lock-plates will be of uniform size a single lock-plate can be used with a number of hamehooks. Hence it is not necessary for the teamster to carry lock-plates, since the one removed from a disabled hame-hook can be used with anew one.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a hame-hook having a folded portion at its pivotal end, of a lock-plate adapted to be detach ably connected with the terminal portion of the fold and OK- tending into the latter and conforming there to, and constructed to close the open side of the fold so as to retain the hame-hook upon the staple of the harnesshame, substantially as set forth.

The combination with a 11 ame-hook having a folded portion at its pivotal end and a knuckle at the extremity of the fold, of a lockplate curved between its edges and adapted to extend into and conform to the said fold, and having knuckles at its outer edge, and a pin passing through the knuckles of the lockplate and harne-hook fold, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In combination, a haine-hook having a portion at its pivotal end doubled upon itself to provide a knuckle and reinforce the end portion of the hook, and bent to provide a fold, a lock-plate curved between its edges and conforming to and adapted to enter the said fold of the hame hook, and having knuckles at its outer edge, and apin passing through the knuckles of the hame-hook and 15 lock-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
