Description

Vinvented a new and Improved VVindow-Sash Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. DE BAUN, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
IIVIPRVED SASH-FASTENING.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, H. DE BAUN, of Paterson, Passaic county, State of N ew Jersey, have following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a front View of my invention applied to a window-sash, Fig. 2, an edge view of the same; Fig. 3, an inner side view of the latch pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved fastening for holding window-sashes at any desired height within the scope of theirmovement.
The object of the invention is to obtain a fastening for the purpose specied which will be simple in construction, operate efficiently, and be capable of being manufactured at a moderate cost.
The invention consists of a latch attached to one side of the window-sash, in combination with a rack attached to the window-frame in such relative position with the latch that the latter may catch into the rack and thereby support the sash.
A represents a portion of a window-frame, and B a portion of a sash fitted therein, as usual. To the inner surface of the frame A, at one side of the sash B, there is secured a rack, C, said rack having ratchetshaped teeth,
the upper surfaces of the saine being horizontal, as shown in Fig. l.
To one side of the sash B there is secured a latch, D. This latch is composed of a thumbpiece, a, and an arm, b, formed of a single piece of metal, the thumb-piece and arm forinin g an obtuse angle with each other, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. This latch works on a pivot, c, which passes through a case, E, secured to the sash by screws d, as shown in Figrl, and in said case there is placed a spring, c, of spiral or other form, which bears upon the thumbpiece a and has a tendency to keep the lower end of the arm b engaged with the rack O.
The sash B, it will be seen by referring' to Fig. 1, may be raised without operating the latch D, as the arm b will slip over the rackteeth as it rises; but the sash cannot be lowered without pressing upward the thumb-piece a, so as to throw the arm b out from therack (J. The rack C should be of such a length as to retain the sash at any height within the scope ot' its movement.
It will be seen that the device may be readily applied by any one, and that it will hold the sash securely. Y I
Having thus described my invention7 what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the case E, latch D, and spring c, operating with the rack C, when c011- structed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
Witnesses: H. DE BAUN.
