SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 559,743, dated May 5, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN H. ORMSBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bolton Landing, in the coun tyof Warren and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding IVork- Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of table with leaf A turned up. Fig. 2 is a side view of same with leaf A down and secured. Fig. 3 is an end view of folded table.

The object of this invention is to provide awork-table which when not desired for use can be readily folded into compact form, and which when in use is perfectly rigid and secure 5 also, to provide a table of this character with a pivoted leaf having on its under side receptacles for the different articles or implements employed in sewing and like work, said leaf serving also as a cover for a receptacle forbuttons and the like,with which the table is supplied.

With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and con1- bination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the two leaves of the table. The leaf A is rigidly secured to the two parallel bars 13, one of which extends the full width of the table near each end upon the under side. These bars are formed each in two sections, united by the hinges (Z, which permit the said sections, with the leaves, to fold downwardly from the center into sub stantially parallel relation to each other. The leaf A is pivoted a short distance in from its outer edge to the bars B in such a manner that it can be turned upwardly, as indicated in Fig. 1, to expose its under side.

The table is supported by the two pairs of legs 0. Each pair of these legs consists of two bars, which cross each other centrally and are pivoted upon a rod or shaft D. The upper ends of the legs are pivoted on rods E, which are held in the bars B B, between which they extend transversely, one near each end of the said bars. The leaf A, above described, is usually pivoted on one of these rods E.

Between the bars B B, underneath the pivoted leaf A, is formed a receptacle F for buttons and the like. Secured to the under side of the said leaf are two parallel cleats G',Whl0l1 embrace the bars B B. Extending transversely between the said cleats is a bar H, having a series of pins h, adapted to receive spools of thread. Upon the outside of the cleats G, I usually provide pockets I for scissors, shears, and the like, and also needlecushions J.

K is a receptacle for a thimble.

L is a hook, by means of which the said leaf may be held securely in its closed or table-forming position. Said hook is pivotally secured in one of the bars B, and is adapted to be swung underneath one of the cleats G, as shown in Fig. 2, in which position it will prevent the leaf being swung on its pivots.

M is a button, which may be employed to guard against any tendency of the leaves to fold or buckle under weight.

The two pairs of legs may be braced to each other, as indicated at N, if desired.

Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A folding table, having the sectional, hinge-jointed bars, B, B, the crossed legs 0, the rod D upon which the legs centrally pivot, the rods E upon which the upper end portions of the said legs pivot, the leaf A rigidly secured to the said bars B B, the leaf A pivoted to one of the rods E and adapted to turn upwardly, the receptacle between the said bars B, B, underneath the leaf A, and recep: tacles upon the under side of the said leaf, substantially as specified.

2.
