Be it known that I, HOWARD G. LOCKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk. and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a top view of my improved last. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the center of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line it 4: of Fig. 3.
My invention relates to that class of lasts which aredivided transversely into two sections, one movable upon the other, and has for its object to improve the construction,
whereby the last can be more readily with` drawn from the boot or shoe Without liability ot' tearing or injuring the same; and to this .end my invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction, as hereinafter set forth and specifically claimed.
In the s aid drawings, A represents the forepartfsection of the last, and B the heel-sec tion; At the rear end of the fore-part section is formed an inwardly-curved seat or socket- 17,*eXtending from 5 to 6 and occupying the lower portion of said rear end, as shown in` Figs. 2 and 3l The front face c of the heelsection is curved outwardly to correspond to and iit the inwardly-curved seat Z) at the rear end of the forepart section. The fore-part section is provided with a tongue el, projecting horizontally outward therefrom, said tongue, which is preferably composed of a metal plate secured in place by bolts e e, eX- tending into a vertical slot f inthe heel-seetion, which is adapted to receive said tongue d., the latter being provided at its outer end with a hole to receive a pivot-pin g, which passes through the front end of the heelsec tion at or near the center of its height and serves to connect the two sections A B` together in such manner that they will have a firm bearing on eachh otherat the joint when the last is in its normal position, the heelsection being adapted to be swungupward around said pivot-pin into the position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3 to permit of the convenient removal of the last from the boot or shoe within which it is placed.
The vertical slot f in the heel-section B is provided with a socket composed of two metal plates 7L 7L, riveted to a bottom piece t', Figs. 3 and 4t, which forms a stop for the tongue d to strike against when the heel-section is brought down into its operative position, so that its bottom will register with the bottoni of the fore-part section, and when the heelsectionof the last is swung upward into the position shown in dotted lines, Figs. 2 and 3, the outer corner l0 of the shoulder 7b' is brought into contact with the straight face l2, which forms the upper part of the forepart section, which thus forms a stop to limit the upward movement of the heel-section, and it will be seen that when the heehsection is thus swung upward its front end does not project above the comb or upper corner 2,0 of the fore-part section, thus avoiding any liability of the upper of the shoe being pressed out of shape or injured from this cause.
By thus pivoting the heel-section, as above described, upon the end of a tongue projecting out horizontally from the fore-part section, so that said heelsection will swing around within the seat. b at the rearrf end of the fore-part section on the pivot-pin g Withouf rising or sliding up at its front end on the fore-part section, it will be obvious that it will move in the are of a much smaller circle, and consequently as it is swung upward its rear end will be drawn inward and raised above the counter of `the shoe within which i is placed milch more rapidly, whereby the operation of withdrawing the last from the boot or slice is greatly facilitated and the liability ot tearing or injuring the upper thus prevented.
I am aware that transversely'divicled lasts hav/e been constructed in which/the fore-part section and heel-section have been pivoted IOC) ascertain, has the heel-section been pivoted to a tongue projecting rearwardly from the fore-part section, whereby the heel-section is caused to merely swing around at its front end on its pvot-pin within a seat at the rear end of the fore-part section without rising or sliding up on the rear face of the said forepart section, which l consider the essential feature of my invention7 as it causes the rear end of the heel-section to swing upward in the arc of a much smaller circle and consequently be drawn inward to shorten the last much more rapidly to relieve the same and facilitate its Withdrawal from the shoe.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A transversely-divided last, consisting of a fore-part section having at its rear end an inwardly-curved seat or socket occupying a portion of said rear end, and a heel-section provided with a vertical slot and having at its front end an outwardly-curved seat adapted to iit and turn Within the inwardly-curved seat of the fore-part section, said heel-section being pivotcd near its front end, by means of a pin passing therethrough, on a tongue projecting rearwardly from the fore-part section into the slot of the heel-section, whereby said heel-section `is adapted to turn on its pivot within the seat or socket of the fore-part section, substantially as set forth.
2. ln a last transversely divided into two sections, the combination of the fore-part section having at its rear end an inwardlycurved seat or socket occupying a portion of said rear end, the heel-section provided With a vertical slot and having an outwardlycurved seat at its front end adapted to fit and turn within the curved sea-t of the fore-part section, a tongue immovably secured to and projecting rearwardly from the fore-part section and fitting within the slot of the heel-section, and a pivot pin passing horizontally through the heel-section near its front end at about the center of its height and through said tongue, whereby the front end of the heel-section is adapted to turn on said pivot within the socket or seat of the fore-part section, and a suitable stop for limiting the downward movement of the heel-section, substantially as set forth.
