No. 559,143. Patented Apr. 28, 1896 INVEN TUH DOM 1916M MI I S A TTORNEHS MIPHOTO-UTHOWASKINGTONYDC' UNITED STATES IATENT OFFICE.
DAVID MISELL, OF NEIV YOBIQN. LY.
ELECTRIC LIG HTAND SIGNALING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 559,143, dated April 28, 1896. Application filed February 25,1896. Serial No. 580,678- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID MIsELL, a sub ject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Light and Signaling Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in combined electric light and signaling devices,in combination with an improved springactuated circuit-maker, which serves the double purpose of ahandle for carrying the device and a switch for controlling its current, the object of the invention being to supply a simple and compact structure of this character which isinexpensive and effective in operation and which is provided with automatic means for preventing waste of current while the device is not in actual use.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device having the upper portion thereof broken away and shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is avertical sectional elevation, and Fig. 3 is a plan View.
I11 the practice of my invention I provide a casing A, which is preferably composed of wood and which may be of any desired form or size. The said casing comprises a box a and a hinged lid a, the two parts being held together by suitable hinges 1 and a locking device 2. In the interior of the box a are located three batteries B, which are in electrical connection with each other.
Located upon the exterior front face of the box ct is a reflector O, which has attached thereto a transparent disk D, which disk is preferably provided with a convex face, whereby rays of light may reflect over a large area.
Located between the disk D and the reflector G is an incandescent lamp E, which is in electrical connection with one pole of the series of batteries 13 by means of a conductor gitudinal spindle 8 and an arched handle 9.
Leading from the conductor 3 is an auxiliary conductor 10, which is in electrical connection with a hell or other signaling device 11 and with a post 12.
The handle 9 is provided around its longitudinal spindles S with coiled springs F, which springs are adapted to maintain the handle in an upright posit-ion, as illustrated by full lines of the drawings.
In the operation of the device, when it is desired to light the lamp E, whereby its rays may be projected through the disk D, it will be simply necessary to press the handle downwardly until it comes in contact with the post 5, whereby a circuit is established, which can be maintained until pressure is. released from the handle, which will then automatically resume its normal upright position and extinguish the light. Should it be desired to sound the signaling device or bell 11, it is simply necessary to press the handle in an opposite direction until it makes a contact with the post 12, whereby a circuit will be established through the bell 11 to operate it.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of construction as described and shown, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to make slight alterations in mere mechanical detail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lighting device, the combination of a casing having electrical batteries placed therein and a lamp sec ured externally thereto, and conductors connecting said lamp and batteries, and a spring-actuated handle, said handle being in operative connection with the said lamp and batteries whereby it is adapted for use as a circuit-maker, substantially as shown and described.
