ELECTRIC CANCLESTHCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,456, dated November 6, 1900.
Application filed January 25, 1900. Serial No. 2,730. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE F. Lnwis, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electrio Candlesticks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to devicesemployed for portable illumination for any purpose, and has for its object the provision of a'cheap, simple, neat, light, and compact electric candlestick.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists, essentially, in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and opera tion, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an electrical candlestick embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal View at line a: a: of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
I have shown my invention as embodied in a sheet-metal candlestick of the simplest form; but it is obvious that the device may be made of any other approved material and ornamented and beautified in any desired manner.
1 is the base of the candlestick, having a carrying-ring 2 thereon. 3 is a vertical cylinder secured to the base 1. 4 is a tube or divided part within the cylinder 3, at the side thereof. 5 is a dry battery which fits within the cylinder 3. 6 and 7 are the respective poles of the battery. 8 is a spring-contact arranged to engage with the pole 7 of the battery and having a conductor 9 leading to a contact 10, fixed upon an insulating-block 11 beneath the false bottom 12 of the cylinder 3. 13 is a spring-contact fixed to the inner side of the cylinder 3 and having a conductor 1%, which leads to a contact 15, also mounted on the base 1. 16 is a switch-bar pivoted at 17, the inner end of said switch-bar being arranged to close the circuit between the contacts and when'the outer extremity 18, located beneath the carrying-ring 2, is pushed to the right, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
' 20 is a metallic ring carrying an electric lamp 21, said ring screwing into the upper extremity of the cylinder 3. 22 is an insulating-block carrying a contact-spring 23, arranged to come in contact with the batterypole 6, the contact-spring 13 striking thering 20. 24 and 25 are the lamp-contacts. The circuit is from the battery-pole 6, through the contact 23, lamp, contact 25, ring 20, contact 13, conductor 14, switch-piece 18, and contac'ts 10 and 15, and the conductor 9, to the pole 7 of the battery.
26 is a ring which screws upon the outside of the top of the cylinder 3. This ring carries a shade or globe 27, which may be made of clear or colored glass to suit the taste of the user. W' hen constructed, assembled, and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, my improved electric candlestick will be found admirably adapted to the uses and purposes for which it is intended wherever a safe, cheap, portable illuminant for periodical use is desired, as when the device is to be utilized the switch is turned by the finger, which engages with the carrying-ring, causing the current to pass through the lamp. When the light is no longer required, or at the time when the device is set down or put away, the switch is reversed in movement, breaking the electric circuit and extinguishing the lamp. If the battery becomes exhausted, the rings 26 and 20 are unscrewed and removed with their attached parts, the battery changed for a new one, and the parts replaced in a moments time and at a trifling expense.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An electric candlestick in which are comprised a foot or base provided with a carrying-ring, a cylindrical casing attached thereto, a dry primary battery within said casing,'
an electric lamp mounted upon the top of said casing, concealed conductors passing to the lamp and to contacts beneath the cylinder, and a concealed switch provided with an operating extension projecting from beneath the cylinder, the whole arranged substantially as shown and described.
Signed by me at New York, State of New York, this 22d day of December, 1899.
