SEWING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,679, dated April 21, 1896.

To all whom t may concern:

le it known that I, ZACHARY T. FRENCH, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Sewing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompany ing'drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings represen ting like parts.

This invention is intended as an improvement on the class of machine shown in United States Patent No. 427,068, datedMay G, `1890, and has for its object to provide means for keeping the looper heated properly by the use of steam or other hot fluid as the heating medium.

In accordance with this invention I have combined with the head of the machine a steam-box which embraces the rock-shaft carryin g the looper, said steam-box having pipes to conduct steam into and from the boX.

Figure l, in side elevation, represents a sufficient portion of the sewing-machine referred to with my improvements added to enable my invention to be understood. Fig. 2 is an enlarged top or plan view, partially broken out, of the steam-box; and Fig; 3 is a partial front end view of said machine.

Referring to the drawings, A2 represents the framework; A3, the head of the machine, in which slides the awl-bar a. b is a guard or fender to act against the inner sole. Z22 is presser-foot or channel-gage. m is a hookgage to engage the edge of the inner sole. c2 is a rocking lever carrying the presser-foot b2. t' is a rocking lever carrying the work support or plate h. b1" is a lever having a rocking lever which in. practice will actuate the bar carrying the hooked needle. These de* vices are and may be substantially as in United States Patent No. 427,068, referred to, wherein like letters are used to designate like parts. The thread-guide f, connected to the vertical rod f', provided at its upper end with a crank and connected to a reciprocating rod f2, is also the same as represented in .the said patent.

In accordance with this invention, however, wherein means have been provided for keeping the rod and thread-guide hot, I have devisedthc instrumentalities which I will now describe.

l have connected to the head of the machine by a suitable screw a steam-box 2l, said steambox having a lug 22, through which said screw is extended. The stea1n-boX has a steam-inlet 23, which receives the pipe 24, said pipe being in communication with some suitable reservoir or supply for steam or other hot liquid. The said box has an outlet 27, which has connected to it a pipe 28, provided with a coil 28X intermediate its length, said pipe being led into one end of a stationary shaft 25, which forms the fulcrum for therockerlever t', said shaft being hollow and having connected to it at its opposite end a pipe 2G, which is preferably led back to the source or supply for steam or other hot fluid, or said pipe may be an exhaust-pipe.

It will be obvious that the flow of the steam or other hot fluid might be in exactly the opposite direction through the steam-box and yet produce` substantially equally beuecial results.

The steam-box 2l is so shaped as to embrace the rod f', carrying the thread-guide, said steam-box, by contact with the said rod, keeping it and the thread-guide hot and obviating the use of a gas-dame, such as has commonly been employed in connection with the machine referred to.

The steam box attachment is properly placed substantially as shown in Fig. l, then adjusted slightly up or down to the precise position desired, the coil 28 permitting sufticient spring for this adjustment, and is then clamped in iixed position by means of the setscrew 20. The coil 28 in the pipe 28 gives a degree of flexibility tothe latter, so that in case the parts do not exact-ly aline as they should the pipe 28 will readily spring or give sufficiently for accurate adjustment. This coil also serves to take up the vibrations of the head and prevent the breaking away of the steam-box in case it should be secured to the head by soldering.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent, is

l. ln a waxthread sewing-machine, a worksupport,the arm for carrying it,and the hollow rod forming the fulcrum for said arm; and a thread-guide, a rocking rod to which it is attached, combined with an independent steam- IOO boX with said hollow fulcrum, the said steampipe having a coil formed therein intermediate its length to permit the same to yield slightly, substantially as described.
