UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND MORRIS, OF MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA.
CHAIR-SEAT AND FABRIC THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,511, dated April 21, 1896. l Application filed October 26, 1895. Serial No. 567,032. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Beit known that I, EDMUND MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Michigan City, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair- Seats and Fabrics Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
Open-mesh cane-cloth has heretofore been extensively used for chair-seats and has fulfilled many of the requirements for such seats, affording the requisite ventilation, economy of material, and a reasonable degree of strength and durability.
The object of my invention is to render such chair-seats stronger and more durable. These ends I accomplish by forming the fabric which constitutes the body of the seat partly of open-mesh material and partly of a close-woven material. The open-mesh material is that ordinarily employed for chair-- seats.
The close-woven material is woven into the open-mesh material and is arranged in one or more strips from front to back of the chair-seat frame.
My improvements are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a top plan view of a chairseat constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 shows a bottom plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail View showing, on an enlarged scale, a crosssection of a portion of the fabric.
The body A of the chair-seat is formed of strips of cane or ratan interwoven to form a fabric and secured in a frame B in any suitable way, such as by splines b.
The drawings show the body as consisting of four strips C of open mesh fabric and three strips D of close-woven fabric. The strips C consist of warp and weft threads arranged in pairs and interwoven as usual and diagonals disposed in the usual way. The strips D are composed of warp and weft threads, but the warps are arranged close together without intervening meshes, and the diagonals are not interwoven, but extend across the under side of the strips, as shown in Fig. 2. By this construction there is more economy in material than where a close-woven fabric is employed for the entire seat, and there 1s greater strength than where an openmesh fabric is employed for the entire seat. The strips D extend from front to back of the chair and act as braces to take the strain of the weight, which, as is well known, is exerted to a greater extent at the front and rear edges of the fabric than anywhere else. A single central strip D might be employed with good results, but I have shown three strips, as greater strength and durability is attained thereby. The diagonals E, crossing each other and extending beneath the strengthening-strips D, of close-woven material, serve as additional supports therefor, and serve todistribute the strain or weight diagonally to other portions of the fabric.
My invention comprehends not only the combination of the improved fabric with a frame for supporting'it, but the fabric itself, which, however, is especially adaptedfor being worked up into chair-seats.
I claim as my inventionl. A chair-seat fabric composed of strips of open-mesh cane-cloth comprising warp and weft threads arranged at right angles and diagonal threads interwoven with the warp and weft threads and arranged at right angles with each other, and one or more strips composed of warp-threads and weft-threads closely woven without meshes, and arranged above the diagonals extending from the openmesh strips. v
2. The combination of the chair-seat frame and the cane-cloth secured thereto around its edges, said cane-cloth having strips of openmesh material comprising warp and weft threads arranged at right angles and'diagonal threads interwoven with the warp and weft threads and arranged atright angles with each other, and one or more strips composed of warp-threads and weft-threads closelywoven without meshes and arranged above the diag onals extending from the open-mesh strips, said strips of close-woven material extending from front to rear of the seat-frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
EDMUND MORRIS.
