Description
UNITED STATEs PATENT QFFIGE.
THoMAs TOSTEVIN, OF COUNCIL- BLUFFS, I0wA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAlR-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,064, dated October 19, 1875; application filed September 11,1875.
GAsE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS TOSTEVIN, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamic and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fabric for Chair-Seats and other purposes; and I do hereby vdeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my fabric, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof.
The object of my invention is to furnish a fabric which shall be elastic and flexible in all of its parts, and which, when used as a chairseat or a bed-bottom, will require no support at the sides, and will resume its normal shape when pressure is removed from it.
The improved fabric has a metal warp, and a weft of any suitable flexible material. The warp, which is designated by the letter a, is made of round, flat, or oval spring-wire, interwoven inv any suitable loom with a weft composed of leather, rushes, round or square cane, round or square hickory splints, previously softened so that when it is beaten up in the Warp it shall hide the latter as much as possible. Hemp cord or wires not necessarily springy may be interwoven with the springwire warp.
My improved fabric be made of any desired the other end.
width, according to the object for which it is designed, and it may be used in combination with other springs, if great elasticity is desired.
The annexed drawing represents my improved fabric in the form of a chair-seat, the spring-Warp wiresa being constructed with eyes I) on one end, with coiled-spring supports on The spring-supports, which are lettered A, are continuations of the warpwires a, and are at the front of the seat. At the back of the seat are triangular springsupports B, the vertical portions of which pass freely through the eyes of the warp-wires,
and the inclined portions pass through loops 6 attached to the warp-wires.
The improved fabric is very elastic, and will yield and accommodate itself to the person sitting or reclining upon it, and when the pressure is removed it will return to its .normal shape.
What I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
"As a new and improved article of manufacture, a fabric for chair-seats and other purposes, composed of a spring-wire warp, a, and fibrous weft, woven together as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOS. TOSTEVIN.
