SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 558,503, dated April 21, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN MARBUR'Y, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dippers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in clippers especially adapted for use in han dling preserves, pickles, or the like; and one object of my invention is the provision of a dipper which will not corrode or rust in 0011- sequence of contact with acids and thus make the dipper free from transmitting poison caused by said acids as is likely to be the case with a metal dipper.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a dipper which will not break in consequence of hard knocks or falls and which will always assume and retain an upright position and not be likely to overturn.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a glass dipper, which will have a strong and durable handle connection and will prove durable, inexpensive, and entirely practical.

To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a dipper embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved dipper, and Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view thereof through the-bowl. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of a modified form of my dipper, and Fig. 4 represents a modified form of another.

In the drawings, A designates the bowl or receptacle of my improved dipper, which is made of glass and has the fiat bottom B,which is thickened or reinforced from C and gradually tapers or thins toward the top edge D. This construction gives the dipper a solid base and also brings the weight upon the bottom or lower side, and when the dipper falls it will land upon the bottom and not break, and also the fiat bottom forms a perfect support for the dipper and will prevent overturning.

At one edge or side is formed the exterior flange or rib E, which forms a strengthening portion for the bowl, and said rib is intersected by the integral boss or lug F, which is provided with exterior screw-threads G, upon which engages the metal connecting-sleeve H, to which is connected the handle J.

In the form of my dipper shown in Fig. 3 the boss or lug is provided with a socket K, which is provided with screw-threads L,which receive the threaded end M of the handle N. In the construction of my dipper shown in Fig.4 the bowl is of somewhat different shape and is provided with a lip or spout O, which permits an easy pouring of the liquid from the spoon or bowl.

It will be observed that the boss on one side of the bowl is materially strengthened by the rib and also that it is arranged intermediate of the top and bottom of the bowl and out of the way, so that it will not be liable to contact.

It is evident that I provide a dipper which will not break when dropped upon a hard floor or surface and will stand hard usage, also that the dipper will be free from corrosion from acids, thus rendering it specially useful in handling food or preserving, also that the dipper is very strong and durable and will always assume an upright position.

I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a dipper made of glass and having the thick bottom to form a rest or support and having the' tapering sides gradually reduced toward the mouth of the dipper, the boss or lug on one side, the strengthening-rib extending from each side of the lug, the ferrule or sleeve attached to the lug, and the handle fitting said sleeve.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a dipper made of glass and having a lug or boss on one side formed with exterior screw-threads and having a socket formed also with screwthreads, a sleeve or ferrule engaging the exterior threads of the lug and a handle fitting in said sleeve and having a stem or reduced end having threads to engage the threads of the socket in the lug or boss.
