Be it known that I, FRANK ALFRED PRICE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shading-Pens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to shading-pens, and the object thereof is to provide an improved pen of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, and which is combined with an or dinar-y writing-pen.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved pen, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular holder A, one end of which is closed, as shown at a, and the other end of which is open and adapted to receive a tubular head B, the outer end of which is provided with a tubular extension I), and within said tubular head is placed a tubular plug of rubber or similar material having an annular shoulder d, which is adapted to closely fit and fill the holder A, and said tubular plug is provided with a tubular extension d, on which is mounted a tubular reservoir G, the outer end of which is closed, as shown at g.

WVithin the tubular extension I) of the tubular head B is placed a pen F, which is of the usual construction and through which the ink is adapted to flow from the reservoir G, and these parts are substantially of the usual construction, and in operation the reservoir G is filled in the usual manner by detaching the parts from the holder A and the tubular head D from the reservoir G.

In the practice of my invention I mount upon the end of the holder A, in which the tubular head is placed, a shading-pen H, which is composed of two sides plates h, which are united by a band or ring K, and said plates h are preferably of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, being carried out substantially parallel from the ring or band K to near the end of the tubular extension I) of the head B and then being inclined and brought together to form the shading-point, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The pen F is of the usual form of writingpens of this class, such as are known as fountain-pens, and by means of my construction I produce a device which may be at any time changed from an ordinary fountainpen to a shading-pen and back again, as will be readily understood, thus combining a writing-pen and a shading-pen in one device.

As thus constructed and combined it will be seen that the shading-pen and the writingpen F are so arranged that the point of the latter comes in contact with one of the plates h when the shading-pen is in position, and in operation when the shading-pen is in position the ink flows through the tubular head D and the pen F upon the plate h, and with which it comes in contact, and thence to the point of contact of the separate plates of the shading-pen, and it will thus be seen that my improvement is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.

The impingement of the blade or side of the shading-pen against the point of the fountain-pen accelerates the flow of ink from the latter to the former in the same manner as when the fountain-pen is used without the shading-pen attachment.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a fountain-pen, of a shading-pen detachably secured thereto and adapted to operate in connection there with, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with atubular holder, which is closed at one end of a tubular head within the other end, a tubular reservoir connected therewith, and within the tubular holder, said tubular head being provided with an extension adapted to receive a writingpen, and a shading-pen adapted to be connected with said holder, and to operate in connection with said writing-pen, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination with a tubular holder, which is closed at one end, of a tubular head Within the other end, a tubular reservoir connected therewith, and Within the tubular holder, said tubular head being provided with an extension adapted to receive a Writingpen, and a shading-pen adapted to be connected With said holder, and to operate in connection with said writing-pen, said shading-pen being composed of a band or ring adapted to be mounted on the end of the holder, and of two spring-plates which project therefrom, one of which comes in contact with the point of the writing-pen, said plates being brought together to form a shadingpen, substantially as shown and described.
