(No Model.)
' W. vR. MYERS;
FIRE BUCKET.
Patented Apr. 14, 18 96.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM R. MYERS, OF HADDONFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
FIRE-BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,295,dated April 14, 1896.
Application filed May 8, 1895. Serial No. 548,519. (N0 model.)
To all whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Haddonfield, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire Buckets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
. My invention relates to improvements in the class of buckets which are adapted to contain suitable chemicals for extinguishing fire; and it consists of novel covers and fasteners for such buckets, whereby the latter may be hermetically sealed and thus rendered air and water tight, all as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a fire-bucket embodying my invention, the parts composing the same being shown in separated position. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional View of the same, the parts being shown in assembled position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a fire-bucket, the same being adapted to contain a suitable chemical B, which is to be thrown upon a fire for the purpose of extinguishing it. The interior of said bucket is rendered air 'and water tight by means of a flanged or dishing cover 0, made of paper or other suitable material, having the bottom D and flange E extending upwardly therefrom and adapted to contact with the interior of said bucket A, said cover 0 being held in position by means of a ring F, of wire or other material, slightly elastic or flexible,
serving to compress the flange against the bucket.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention the inner portion of the bucket is coated with suitable material, as at G, whose function is to resist the action of the chemical upon the material of Which said bucket is made, and this coating after application, bein g slightly adhesive, assists to hold the flange E in place, the ring 1 forcing said flange tightly in contact with the interior of the bucket, thereby forming a closed joint, the interior of said bucket being thus rendered air and water tight.
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to extinguish a fire, the cover 0 is broken and the chemical contained in the bucket is thrown upon the fire, thereby extinguishing the same, it being only necessary to remove the ring F and the broken cover when it is desired to refill said bucket, after which a new cover and the old ring may be placed in position, the parts appearing as seen in Fig. 2.
The coverand its fastening-ring may be applied to buckets other than fire-buckets, wherein the cover requires to be hermetically sealed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fire-bucket, having its inner face adapted to resist the action of the chemical employed, in combination with a cover provided with a bottom and an upwardly-extending circumferential flange, and an elastic ring seated within said cover and adapted to press said flange outwardly against said inner face of the bucket, said parts being combined substantially as described.
WILLIAM R. MYERS.
