V. LARSON. TRANSOM OPERATING DEVICE.
Patented Apr. 14, 1896.
WITNESSES INVENTOR A TTORNEYJ U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VICTOR LARSON, OF WVHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK.
TRANSOM-OPERATING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,287, dated April 14, 1896. Application filed May 27, 1895. Serial No. 550,796. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VICTOR LARSON, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vhite Plains, county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to transoms; and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective device for operating the same, either to close it and keep it closed or to open the same and adjust it to any desired position for ventilation or other purposes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 represents a door provided with a transom with which is connected my improvement, part of the casing of the door being broken away to show the operative mechanism; and Fig. 2, a side view of the same.
In applying my invention the side frame of the door is preferably formed as a casing or box having side and front plates 2 and 3, the plate 2 being adjacent to the door. The tram som-frame 1 is pivoted at its opposite ends in the usual manner, and one of these pivots 5 extends through the plate 2 and is provided with a crank-lever 6, to which is pivotally connected at '7 a rod or bar 8, which extends downwardly through the box-casing,as shown, through a guide 9, secured to the casing, below which it is pivotally connected at 10 with an extension or rack-bar 11, which slides in a guide 12, the guides 9 and 12 being both preferably secured to the plate 2 of the easing. Therack-bar 10 is operated by a pinion 13, supported in contact therewith, as shown at 14, and the shaft 15 of which extends through the front plate of the casin g, as shown at 16, and is provided with an ornamental thumb-nut 1'7.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the bar 8 being raised or lowered by turning the nut 17, which is located at a convenient distance from the floor, by which movement the transom is operated through the crank-lever 6, the pivotal connection of the bar with the crank-lever and rack-bar rendering this operation free and easy and preventing the twisting or locking of the parts. Revolubly mounted in the shaft 15, which is preferably tubular to admit of this arrangement, is a shaft 20, having a thumb-nut or head 21 on its outer end and a crank-lever 22 on its inner end, with which is connected a rod 23, which is secured at its upper end to one end of a pivoted arm or look 24, adapted to engage with a slot or recess 25, formed in the end of the transom-frame, by which the transom may be locked in the closed position, the lock-arm 24' being operated by the thumb-nut or head 21, as will be readily understood.
I thus accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device simple in construc tion and efiective in operation and'comparatively inexpensive.
I do not limit myself to the exact form of construction and arrangement of parts herein shown, as it is evident that the operative mechanism need not be inclosed unless so desired and that other changes maybe made without departing from the scope of my invention; but,
Having fully described the invention, its construction and operation, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
The combination of a transom pivotally supported in place, of a rod or bar connected therewith, arack at the lower end of said bar, a tubular shaft 15, a pinion mounted on said shaft and meshing with the rack, a shaft 20 revolubly mounted on the tubular shaft and having a suitable head, a crank-lever on its inner end, a rod connected with said lever and an arm or look pivotally secured to the upper end of said rod and adapted to engage a slot or recess in one end of the transom-frame, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed myname, in presence of two witnesses, this 25th day of May, 1895;
VICTOR LARSON.
