My invention relates principally to safes in which the door is swung free of the safe by means of a crane-hinge or traverse hinge; and the object of myfinvention is to provide a means by which the door in opening and closing may be held in the proper position to be projected into the jamb of the safe.
The invention hereinafter described is designed especially for use with safes known as the round-door kind, but may be used to equal advantage with any safe in which the door is swung free of the safe by means of a crane or traverse hinge.
My invention is illustrated in the panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the front of a rounddoor safe having a part of the hinge and outside plate of the door broken away to show the fastening-bolt and its application to the door. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the safe and door on line a: 00 of Fig. 1, also showing the hinge and a top View of the fastening device. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 2, except that the door is shown open and engaged by the fastening device. Fig. 4is a side view of the fastening device, having a part of the sleeve which holds the fastening bolt removed to show the fastening-bolt. Fig. 5 is an end view of the fastening device. Fig. 6 shows a modification of the form of the projecting block.

In the drawings, A represents the safe-door of a round-door safe. The door A is swung on hinges B B, which hinges are connected by a plate 0. The door may be swung away from the safe upon the hinges B B. The door is held between the hinges B 13 upon pins 0 0, upon which it may be turned, and is also adapted to revolve within the hinges.
gThe device for holding the door when opened consists of a sliding bolt 01, which moves in a h and tends to hold the wheel and pin rigidly and to cause the bolt to slide smoothly.
\Vhile the plate 2' is desirable to insure the smooth working of the bolt, it may be omitted, if desired.

In the drawings the sleeve is provided with a plate m, by means of which it is attached to the hinge-plate O. The manner of attaching the sleeve e to the hinge is, however, not material to my invention.

When the door is closed, the bolt d is held away from the safe-door by the contact of the wheel h with the incline face of block is or k,
as shown in Fig. 6. When the door is opened,
the outward movement of the door allows the wheel h (pressed forward by spring f bearing upon the bolt d) to pass down the incline face of the projecting block, and the bolt (1 engages an opening at n in the door and holds the door in a suitable position to be closed. When the door is swung inwardly in closing, the contact of wheel h with incline face of the projecting block causes the withdrawal of bolt d from the door, and the door, when it enters the opening in the safe, is free to be turned and closed, as desired.
If desired, the bolt may be pressed forward by the contact of wheel h with the incline face 19 of block k, as shown in Fig. 6 and I do not limit my invention to the use of the spring f alone for pressing the bolt forward, as it is apparent that the incline face 10 may be substituted for the spring f or may be used in conjunction with the spring f.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a safe, in combination with the door and its hinge, a sliding bolt engaging the door, and held by a suitable sleeve attached to the hinge, and having pin 9 which engages the incline face of a projecting block attached to the safe, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a safe, in combination with the door and its hinge, a sliding bolt engaging the door and held by a sleeve attached to the hinge, and being engaged by a sprin g f, the bolt also having pin 9 which engages the projecting block is substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
3. In a safe, in combination with the door and its hinge, a sliding bolt held by a suitable sleeve attached to the hinge and being engaged by the spring f, the bolt also having pin 9 provided with friction-wheel h which engages the projecting block 7o attached to the safe, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a safe, in combination with the door and its hinge, the sliding bolt held in a suitable sleeve attached to the hinge and being engaged by spring f, the sliding plate 1' and the pin 9 attached to the bolt and engaging the projecting block 70, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. In a safe, in combination with the door and hinge, the sliding bolt held in a suitable sleeve attached to the hinge and being engaged by a spring f, the sliding plate 2', the pin 9 attached to the'bolt and being provided with friction-wheel h which engages the projecting block 75, substantially as shown and described.
