UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
HOIVARD l-I. CHERRY, OF SYRACUSE, NEWV YORK.
SANITARY CHAMBER PAIL OR VESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,040, dated April 14:, 1896. Application filed May 28, 1894. Renewed S t mber 17, 1895. Serial No. 562,807. (No model.)
To all whom it may COM/68770.;
Be it known that I, HOWARD H. CHERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Chamber Pails or Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my sanitary chamber pail or vessel; Fig. 2, a top plan thereof with the cover in place, and Fig. 3 a top plan of same as appearing with its cover removed.
Like letters and figures of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views. I
My invention has reference broadly to that class or species of utensils utilized in bed rooms and commonly denominated as chamleer-buckets, chamber-pots, or sloppails, and which, as is obvious, are intended for and employed as temporary receivers for fluids or solid substances, such as urine or chamber-lye, fecal matter, dirty wash-water, and slops generally.
The purpose of my invention is the production of a pail or vessel of the species referred to so constructed and combiningly arranged as to embody in one structure a satisfactory utensil for the reception direct from the body of a person of urinary and fecal discharges and with convenience and comfort to the person occupying, as he or she may, a natural sitting posture, as well as serving the functions of a pail or vessel into which may be poured urine, dirty water, &c., 7 from ordinary chamber-pots, washbowls, and the like.
Ooincidently my object is the construction of a chamber utensil possessing the characteristics stated adaptable of being easilykept in good sanitary condition through simple means for the disinfecting thereof, as well as the atmosphere surrounding or contiguous the pail or vessel, when so desired.
Furthermore, the intent of my invention is the formation of a chamber pail or vessel of the nature aforestated that is of simple yet durable construction and of so comprehensive arrangement in detail parts as will insure not only a utensil of perfect build, but of reliable operation and complete adaptability for the uses it is designed for.
. My invention consists in the novel features of construction, coadaptation, and operation hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows:
A denotes a cylindrical fluid-tight pail or vessel which, a medium distance below its open top or mouth, is formed with an annularlike flange or ofiset a, standing horizontally outward a moderate degree beyond the periphery of the contiguous underlying portion of the pail-body, which flange or ledge a at its circumferential edge is bordered by an upstanding annular rim b, extending above the flange a a slight height and creating the expanded open top or mouth of the pail-body. From opposite sides of the rims periphery there are outstanding ears 1 1, whereto a bail-like handle 2 is pivotally attached in the ordinary manner, the central enlarged portion 3 of the bail-handle forming a satisfactory grasp for ones hand. Moreover, the sweep of said curvilinear bail-handle is such as to insure its clearance of the upper portions appertaining to my pail form ation when swung upward or downward. About midway the height of the pail-body, at opposite external sides, I provide, when so desired, side handles 4: l, as indicated.
Preferably I provide the pail-body with a curved annular base 5 beneath its bottom proper, and thereby protecting the raised bottom from wear or injury through its otherwise direct contact with a floor, while coincidently said downwardly-flanged base portionaffords the hold so advantageous to-a person who is about to tilt the pail for the purpose of emptying its contents.
B indicates a centrally-apertured seat of circular form detachably mounted in proper position across the interior of the open upper part of the body A of my pail or vessel and upstanding a medium distance above the annular top edge of the rim 1) thereof. Said mound-like or raised seat B for occupancy by a person comprises a circular tapered portion 0 and the horizontal fiat part 01, standing across from the convergent upper boundary of the tapered ring portion, which upward fiat part is provided with a large central hole or aperture 6, occupying the major portion of the flat plate d, and is of ovoidal or oval contour, looking at it in plan. Being of ovoidal shape, said seat-hole admits of the buttocks of a person being properly accommodated incidental to the occupancy of said seat and hole concurrently by the posterior of an individual seated thereon responsive to the calls of nature, whether urinary or fecal, or both. The lower flaring portion 0 of the seat is provided at its circumferential edge or border with an annular groove or rabbet e of shape transversely creating double-bearing shoulders f f at the said bottom edge of the circular or band-like portion of the seat, the annular shoulder or offset f resting upon the horizontal inner edge portion of the ledge or flange a of the pail-body, and thereby entailing support of the seat, while the diverging downstanding shoulder part f loosely abuts against the inner periphery of the pail or vessel at that point from whence the flange-a commences, thereby insuring the retention of the seat 13 in proper position at the open top of the pail and lateral displacement through carelessness or otherwise practically impossible, and yet allowing requisite freedom for the direct raising or lowering of the seat into place, as may be required.
My-purpose in having the seat B of a moundlike shape is to insure increased stiffness and rigidity thereto by reason of its brace or truss like formation and preventing yielding or detrimental depression of the same by reason of the weight brought to bear thereon by an occupant thereof, and my object in having said seat extend up above the top edge of the pail-body is that the rump or posterior'of the person sitting upon the apertured seat cannot well come in contact with the'more or less penetrable rim of the pail-body A, whereby chafing or bruising of the sensitive flesh might result. Moreover, the especially left annular space between the pail-rim b and the flat portion of the apertured seat assures additional non-liability of the posterior or thighs of an occupant of said seat from disagreeable contact with the rim of the body aforementioned. G is a cover circumferentially inclosing the detachable seat 13 and concurrently closing the mouth of the pail or vessel body A, which pail-cover comprises the vertical band portion g, fiat top it, annular bead 2', and central handle 70, besides certain auxiliary features hereinafter to be specified. The band g of said cover fits easily within the rim b of the pail-body, the head i resting 011 the annular edge of said rim, and sufficient space is insured at the expanded upper end of the body A that the band portion g of the cover will not come in contact with the contiguous portions of the encompassed seat B, by reason of which provision no binding of the two parts can occur, and in the uplifting of the cover for removal all liability of the seat arising with it is thoroughly obviated.
Referring, further, to the cover formation 0, I indicate at 7 a cup-like disinfectant holder or container connected with the under side of the cover, at its central part, and extending a brief distance downward, and Z are slight perforations formed through the wall of the disinfectant-holder, at its upper part, for the permeation of the disinfectant fumes or qu alities of the disinfecting substance (or liquid) into the interior of the pail or vessel and purifying same.
Arising from the cover 0, diametrically over the disinfectant-holder and communicating by its bore therewith, is a nipple 8, externally threaded, which nipple or tube has lateral perforations 'm contiguous the top of the cover, as well as the obvious upper opening of the bore thereof, and 9 is ascrew-cap adapted to close up the upper opening of the filling-nipple, as well as the lateral perforations, when screwed completely down, while in case it is desirable that the fumes or qualities of the disinfecting material should have egress outside the pail as well as inside for the purification of the air about or adjacent my device the screw-cap 9 is retracted upwardly sufficiently to uncover the perforations m, communicating with the bore leading to the disinfectant-container. Evidently for the introduction of the disinfecting substance or liquid the screw-cap is entirely removed from the nipple aforestated.
As is discernible, upon the removal of the cover 0 the seat 13 is uncovered for requisite use in responding to the calls of nature, and, moreover, is in readiness for the pouring into the pail or vessel from other utensilsof fluids, 850., through the hole 6 of the seat, or, if preferable, directly through the mouth'of the pail body, by temporary removal of said seat 13.
Of course for the emptying of the contents of my sanitary pail or vessel both the cover and the seat are removed therefrom.
As is noticeable, there being no inwardlyprojecting flanges or lugs, &c.,within the interior of the pail, free and complete discharge of its contents is well assured.
While preferably I construct my deviceof galvanized or other sheet metal of requisite strength formed to proper shape, yet evidently earthenware may be as satisfactory.
When so deemed best, I glaze the interior of the pail or vessel body and other overhead portions, and rendering any cohesion of sticky solids to the interior less likely than devoid of a glazed coating.
The exceeding utility of my device for use in bed-chambers and rooms of invalids and otherwise is well evident, supplying, as it does, in a practical manner a long-felt want.
I-laving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sanitary chamber pail or vessel comprising an apertured seat removably spanning the mouth of a chambered body, and a detachable cover concurrently inclosing said seat and closing the mouth of the hollow body aforesaid, the combination with the detachable cover of a disinfectant-holder connected thereto and extending centrally downward from the covers lower face and provided with orifices contiguous said cover leading from the interior of the holder to its exterior, a nipple arising from the center of the cover and its bore communicating respectively with the interior of the disinfectant-holder and the exterior of the cover, lateral perforations in said nipple leading from its bore outward
