FLASHING.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 558,025, dated April 14:, 1896. A li ati fil d October 29, 1895. flerial No. 567,256. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS BARRY, J12, of Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flashings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improved flashingjoint for ventilating pipes, flues, &c., extending through roofs or floors Where a watertight joint is desired; and its object is to provide an adjustable fiashing-piece which can be fitted easily to various pitches of roofs and make a perfectly tight joint, and which will .compensate for expansion or contraction of pipes or unequal settlement of the roof and pipe or flue, &c., in relation to each other, so that a weather-tight joint will be constantly maintained.
By this invention the joint can be made easily, quickly, and economically in a better manner than is ordinarily possible unless special castings are made for the particular flashing.
The invention is concisely summarized in the claims, and the best form of the flashingjoint now known to me is described as follows, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a flashingjoint detached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the flashing-joint in position on a moderately-inclined roof. Fig. 3 isa similar section of the flashing applied to a steeppitched roof.
As shown, the flashing consists of a bottom plate A, having a central opening around which rises a short sleeve B, which is annularly corrugated or crimped, as indicated in the drawings, so that it can be compressed or extended longitudinally on any side, as is desired, to enable the flash-plate to fit closely on a roof of any pitch, while the sleeve is kept vertical, or the flashing may be described as consisting of an annularly-corrugated pipe joint B, provided at its lower end with a lateral flange A. The upper end of sleeve B is plain, so that it can be clamped by a split ring or hose-coupling Cof any suitable description.
In using the invention, for example,to make a flashing-joint around a ventilating-pipe extending through a roof, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the sleeve B is slipped over the ventpipe P with plate A lowermost. This plate is then fastened to the roof in the ordinary manner. The upper end I) of pipe B is clamped around the pipe by the split ring 0 or other suitable device, and thus awater-tight flashing-joint is made between the pipe and roof. If the roof is slanted, the corrugations on one side of the sleeve will be compressed, as in dicated in Figs. 2 and 3, so that the sleeve remains in line with the pipe, while the plate is flush with the roof. Of course the flashingjoint may be first secured to the roof and the vent-pipe subsequently passed therethrough and secured.
The flashing will fit on flat roofs or any or dinary pitch of roof and make a substantial joint, and at the same time compensate for any unequal contraction or expension or settlement of parts.
The flashing-joint is preferably made of soft sheet metal, and the sleeve and flange permanently united before they are put in position.
I do not confine myself to the particular shape and construction of the adjustable flashing-joint herein shown, as it may be va ried within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. An adjustable flashing-j oint,co1nprising a compressible and extensible sleeve and a plate or flange on one end of the sleeve, constructed substantially as described, so that the sleeve may be adjusted to various angles to the flange or plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein -described adjustable and compensating flashing, consisting of a corrugated sleeve, and a flat flash-plate or flange on one end thereof,substantially as described.
3.
