Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRICK E. LOFGREEN AND VILLIAM H. XVIIISLER, OF MUSCATINE, IOVA, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO F. C. OULLEN, F. O. BLOCH, AND HENRY VASSERMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
STOVE-POLISH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,842, dated April 7, 1896.
Application filed December 27, 1894:. Serial No- 533,049. (No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDRICK E. LOF- GREEN and WILLIAM H. WHIsLnR, of Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Polish; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in stove'polishes.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved compound having powdered aluminium as a metallic basis and which is so combined with other ingredients as to constitute a practical and thoroughly operative stove-polish which will quickly dry and will not be affected by a continuous high degree of heat.
The invention consists in forming a mixture of a certain proportion of aluminium powder with rosin and a highly-volatile mineral oil in proper proportions.
In carrying out our invention and preparing the improved stove-polish the rosin is dissolved by a volatile mineral oil and the very fine pure aluminium-metal powder is thoroughly mixed therein.
The compound is spread in a thin film on the stove, and the solvent evaporates off, leaving a high polish of the natural color of the pure aluminium metal, and which does not require rubbing to polish, and which retains its color and polish, does not readily burn, peel, or rub off, but is most lasting and stands the high and continuous heat of the stove.
In making the compound usually one-half as much aluminium powder, by weight, is employed as rosin and benzene or gasolene and one'third as much rosin as benzene. Hence one formula of my compound could be aluminium powder, two ounces; rosin,0ne ounce; benzene or gasolene, three ounces.
By reason of the peculiar nature of this compound as an entirety it constitutes a successful stove-polish that can be applied to the stove while hot and will dry immediately, or when applied to a cold surface will dry in two or three minutes and will not rub or burn off nor blister.
The invention differs radically from and we make no claim' for compounds used in stamping fabrics or for japanning various kinds of material and which are in no sense stove-polishes and are absolutely inoperative for such use.
IVhat we claim is The herein-described stove-polish formed of the following ingredients mixed in about the proportion stated; viz. benzene or gasolene one-half; powdered aluminium metal two-sixths; rosin one-sixth, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
FREDRICK E. LOFGREEN. YVILLIAM H. WHISLER.
lVitnesses HENRY OREMER, JAKE SCHOMBERG.
