URINAL GUARD 0R SCREEN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,762, dated April '7, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, MICHAEL W. BRocK- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Urinal Guard or Screen, of which the following is a specification.

This invention aims to prevent the stopping up and fouling of urinals by the lodgment of foreign matter in the outlet-apertures leading from the urinal to the soil or waste pipe; and it consists of a guard or screen comprising a body portion of wire-netting and a circumscribing frame conforming to the outline of the urinal, said frame being tubular and slotted on its under side to receive the edge portion of the wire-netting to protect and stifien the same and obviate projecting ends of the wires, which would catch and retain foreign matter and give an untidy appearance to the urinal.

The guard or screen conforms to the outline of the urinal and extends across the open end thereof and is removably inserted therein, so as to be readily removed for cleaning and other required purposes.

The improvement will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the invention, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the guard or screen. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line XX of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section,on a larger scale, showing the manner of attaching the wire-netting to the tubularand slotted frame.

The numeral 1 indicates a urinal of any desired pattern, and 2 the guard or screen, which conforms to the outline of the urinal, so as to fit within the same and catch foreign matter, which may have a tendency to clog and stop the outlet-openings.

The frame 3 is tubular and slotted in its lower side at 4 to receive the upturned edge portion 6 of the wire-netting 5, forming the body of the guard. The edge portion 6 of the wire-netting is bent up, and may be held between the separated portions of the frame bordering upon the slot 4in any manner, preferably by flowing solder therein, which fills the said slot 4 and prevents the lodgment of foreign matter therein.

The frame may be formed in any desired manner, the most general way being from a strip of metal, which is curled or bent between its edges, so as to embrace the upturned edge portion 6 of the wire-netting. The best results are attained by having the slot 4 on the lower side of the frame, as the longitudinal edges of the frame can form a close joint with the sides of the urinal; moreover, the joint formed between the wire-netting and the frame is hidden from view and the device made to appear more attractive and pleasing, and the liability for gathering accumulations reduced to a minimum.

Theguard or screen can be cheaply manufactured and will have various shapes to conform to the outline of the different makes of urinals. The wire-netting is rendered noncorrosive by being galvanized or otherwise coated, and is dipped into a bath to efiect this result. Advantage is taken of this to fill the slot 4 in the frame, and by having the said slot on one side of the frame that portion of the bath entering the slot 4 will be retained within the frame, as the latter is immersed in the bath with the slot uppermost.

To facilitate the removal of the screen or guard from the urinal, a ring or similar device 7 is provided and attached to the upper end thereof. The screen or guard will be shaped to suit the style or pattern of the urinal designed to be fitted with the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A guard or screen for urinals, constructed substantially as herein specified, the same comprising a tubular frame conforming to the urinal and having a slot in its lower side, and a wire-netting having its edge portion bent at approximately right angles and fitted into the slotted side of the frame and secured therein, and having the slot filled by flowing solder or like substance into the slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
