DAVID MACARN KITTLE, OF SYRACUSE, NEV YORK.
COMBINED SALT AND PEPPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part .of Letters Patent No. 557,682, dated April 7, 1896. Application filed October 31, 1895. Serial No. 567,479. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MACARN KITTLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Salt and Pepper Box, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
This invention relates to salt and pepper boxes; and the object thereof is to provide a combined pepper and salt box, either of which may be used, as desired; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form'a part, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved pepper and salt box; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 a plan view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a cylindrical box or casing A, within which is arranged a corresponding cylindrical box or casing B, the inner box or casing B being taller than the outer one and the upper end thereof being provided with a band or ring D, provided at its base with an outwardly and downwardly directed rim or flange d, the outer edge of which restson top of the outer casing A, and mounted on the upper portion of said outer casing A and resting on an annular head a formed thereon is a band or ring G, the upper end of which is provided with an annular inwardly-directed flange or rim g, which extends over the flange or rim a of the ring or band 1), and said ring or band D is free to revolve within certain limits, as will be hereinafter described, and the ring or band G is held in position by an ordinary bayonetjoint 9 I alsoprovide a cap or cover H,
which is provided with a depending rim or flange 71, which surrounds the ring or band B and is held in place thereon bya bayonetjoint ha, and beneath the cap or cover H is a plate K, which is adapted to conform thereto and which is provided with projections 7a,
.which project through corresponding slots formed in the top of the rim or flange h of the cap H, as shown in Fig. 2.
The cap H is perforated, as is also the plate K beneath the same, and the rim or flange d of the band D is also perforated, and so also is the rim or flange gof thering or band G, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The annular compartment L is designed to receive salt, and the inner cylindrical compartment M is designed to receive pepper, or these uses may be reversed, if desired; and whenever it is desired to discharge the salt the cap H is turned, and this operation causes the perforations in the flange or rim g and in the flange or rim (Z to register, the ring or band D being turned by means of the depending flange or rim 7t of the cap H, and whenever it is desired to discharge the pepper the plate K is turned, by means of the projections it, so that the perforations therein will register with the perforations formed in the cap H.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of these parts, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combined salt and pepper box, composed of an outer cylindrical casing, and an inner cylindrical casing, arranged therein, the inner casin g being higher than the outer one, a ring or band mounted on the upper end of the inner casing and provided with a perforated rim or flange which extends outwardly, to the top of the outer casing, a ring or band mounted on the upper part of the outer casing, and provided with a perforated rim or flange, which extends inwardly to the firstnamed ring or band, a perforated cap provided with a depending flange or rim which is secured to the ring or band mounted on the top of the inner casing, and a perforated plate below said perforated cap, substantially as shown and described.
2. A combined salt and pepper box, composed of an outer cylindrical casing, and an inner cylindrical casing, arranged therein, the inner casing being higher than the outer one, a ring or band mounted on the upper end of the inner casing and provided with a perforated rim or flange which extends outwardly, to the top of the outer casing, a ring or band mounted on the upper part of the outer casing, and provided with a perforated rim or flange, which extends inwardly to the firstnamed ring or band, a perforated cap provided with a depending flange or rim which is secured to the ring or band mounted on the top of the inner casing, and a perforated plate below said perforated cap, and means for turning said perforated plate, so that the perforations therein, and in the cap will register, substantially as shown and described.
3. A combined salt and pepper box, composed of an outer cylindrical casing, and an inner cylindrical casing, arranged therein, the inner casing being higher than the outer one, a ring or band mounted on the upper end of the inner casing and provided with a perfo rated ring or flange which extends outwardly, to the top of the outer casing, a ring or band mounted on the upper part of the outer casing, and provided with a perforated rim or flange, which extends inwardly to the firstnamed ring or band, a perforated cap provided with a depending flange or rim which is secured to the ring or band mounted on the top of the inner casing, and a perforated plate below said perforated cap, and means for turning said perforated plate, so that the perforations therein, and in the cap will register, and means for turning the ring or band mounted on the upper end of the inner casing, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 28th day of October, 1895.
