No. 557,570. 'PatentedApn 7, 1896! Il 4 |||||l l y "uw o WWNESSESz E @@LJWMM I 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OSEPII S. ERICKSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUIVlPlNG WAGON OR CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 557,570, dated April 7, 1896.
Application filed December 31, 1895. Serial No. 573,890. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dumping Wagons and Carts, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to dumping wagons and carts; and it consists of a novel construction of actuating mechanism therefor, whereby the body can be readily dumped and afterward quickly and expeditiously returned to its normal condition.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a side elevation of a dumpingcart embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the bottom of the same. Fig. 3 represents a View through the body, partly in section, on line y y, showing a portion of the actuating mechanism. Fig. 4l represents a sectional View through the body, showing another portion of the actuating mechanism and its adj uncts, the section being taken on line a; x.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a portion of a dumping-cart consisting of the body B, the shafts or sills C, and springs E, which latter are mounted upon the axle D by means of boxes, straps, or hangers in the usual manner, said body being mounted on the shaft H, whose journals have their bearings in the boxes J, the latter being attached to the sills C.
F designates a segmental rac-k which is attached to the body at aV point F', said rack having arms G extending therefrom to a suitable hub F2, which is mounted on the shaft H.
K designates a gear which is mounted in suitable bearings and is adapted to mesh With the rack F, said gear K being secured to the shaft L, and being actuated by means of the pinion N, which is suitably journaled in a box or plate M, which may be attached to the shafts or sills C.
The end P of the journal on which the pinion N is mounted may be squared for the application of a Wrench or crank-handle Q thereto if desired.
'll-he operation is as follows: The parts are shown in their normal position in Fig. l, and
it will be evident that if the pinion N is rotated in the proper direction by its engagement with the gearK and the engagement of the latter with the rack F, the body B can be caused to assume the position seen dotted in Fig. 1. Upon rotation of the pinionN in the opposite direction, the body will be caused to assume the position seen in full lines again in Fig. l.
It will of course be understood that there are preferably two sets of gears, racks, and pinions, and that various changes may be made in the manner of assembling the parts which will come within the scope of my invention.
By having the body B mounted on the boxes J, which are secured to the sills C, as has been stated, the axis of said body is thus elevated above the axle of the Wheels of the cart, by which provision the body, when turned on said axis, may be raised in front to a greater distance and 4caused to assume more nearly a vertical positionthan where the axle forms the axis of the body, thus increasing the throw of the body and greatly facilitating the discharging of the contents of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a dumping-cart, a Wagon-body, sills therefor, a shaft upon Which said body is mounted, the journals of said shaft being mounted upon said sills, and a segmental rack secured to said shaft, and having a connection to said Wagon-body, in combination with gearing mounted on the sills meshing with said rack, and springs common to said sills and to the running-gear of the cart, substantially as described.
2. In a dumping-cart, the sills C, the supporting-springs E attached thereto, means for connecting the said springs with theaxle of the cart, boxes secured to'said sills above said means, a shaft having its bearings in said boxes and adapted to support the Wagonbody, a rack mounted on said shaft and having a connection therefrom to said Wagon body, and mechanism mounted on said sills for operating said rack, substantially as described.
JOSEPH S. ERICKSON.
