DIVIGHT C. CLAPP, OF OWOSSO, MICHIGAN.
DRIVING-MITTEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,362, dated March 31, 1896. Application filed December 16, 1895. Serial No. 572,289. (No model.)
To all whom it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, DWIGHT O. CLAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owosso, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving-Mittens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The obj cct of this invention is to afford protection to the drivers hand from rain or cold; and to this end the invention consists in a pcculiarly-constructed gauntlet or driving-mitten which will protect the drivers hand from rain, snow, or cold and permit the attachment of the driving rein or reins thereto, all as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional plan of a drivingmitten with fastening devices for a pair of reins. Fig. 2 is a similar plan of the drivingmitten detached from the reinastening device and a device for fastening a single rein thereto. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 2, with the rein-fastening device secured thereto.
A A represent a pair of reins.
B is a gauntlet or driving-mitten having the preferred form shown, which differs from the ordinary driving-mitten in being made without the usual end of finger-section and having the portion which receives the hand suitably larger to accommodate the balled fist. At the wrist it is also contracted to form a rather close fit to the wearer, and preferably the material from which the gauntlet is made should be waterproof and protect the hand from cold. WVithin the fist portion of this gauntlet is secured a perforated handhold 0, of wood or other non-heat-conducting material, in any suitable manner, whereby it is firmly united at the ends with the material of the glove to protect against the entrance of air or moisture and preferable to revolve freely, such as by means of a ferrule D extending loosely through the handhold, with the material of the gauntlet firmly secured between washers a b fastened upon the ends of the ferrule. The rein-holding devices are secured to the gauntlet by means of a shaft E, whicl1 is removably inserted through the handhold and upon the projecting ends of which the rein-holding devices proper are secured. These, as shown in the drawings, consist of a curved bed-plate F, provided at one end with a passage F for sleeving it upon the shaft and .With ears II, between which the serrated cam I is secured, all so arranged that the cam and curved portion of the bed-plate form a clamping device for the rein of wellknown operation.
' As shown in a modification in Fig. 2, I may secure a single rein-holding device by means of a stirrup I to a cross bar or shaft through the handhold of the gauntlet. My construction leaves it thus optional with the driver to have both reins or only a single rein connected with it, in which latter case two gauntlets would be required for a pair of reins.
It will be seen that in my construction neither moisture nor air can find access to the hands, provided the gauntlet fits to the wrist of the wearer, and at the same time the device does not interfere with properly handling the re1ns.
While I have described a preferable form of gauntlet I wish it understood that the ordinary form of gauntlet or mitten may be used.
That I claim as my invention is- 1. A driving-gauntlet, having a handhold secured within the gauntlet, and a shaft extending through the handhold, and rein-fastening devices secured to the gauntlet by means of said shaft, substantially as de scribed.
2. In a driving apparatus, the combination of a gauntlet, a tube extending laterally through the gauntlet and having its ends united therewith, a handle sleeved upon said tube, within the gauntlet, a shaft removably held in the tube, and rein-fastening devices secured to said shaft exteriorly of the gauntlet, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DWIGHT O. OLAPP.
