N ECK-YOKE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,041, dated March 24, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY W. WILooX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winsted, in the county of Litchfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in neck-yokes, and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap combined neck-yoke and hames for working horses or mules or other animals direct from the collar without other harness by simply attaching the chain as for oxen. The hames are swiveled on the ends of the yoke and are provided with a joint at the side, whereby the same may be readily applied or removed from the neck of the animal, suitable means being provided for holding the hames in their closed position.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both of the views.

Referring now to the details of the drawin gs by letter, A designates the yoke provided at its center with the pintle, hook or other provision at for the connection of the draft appliance.

B are the hames pivotally mounted upon the ends of the yoke, so as to have freedom of movement thereon, in this instance being shown as provided upon the lower face of their curved portions 13 with the depending pin or pintle b, which passes through the tubular portion C depending from the under side of the ends of the yoke, the said pin or pintle being held against displacement by means of a removable pin or key D. The hames have each one or both sides pivotally connected with the upper end of the curved portion B. In this instance both of these portions B are shown as pivotally connected with said upper ends, as at the joint being an ordinary rulejoint, as indicated in Fig. 2, or any other preferred form that will serve the purpose. Either or both of these may be moved on their pivot or hinge, so as to permit of the ready application of the hames to the collar or neck of the animal. The upper end of one of the parts 13 is provided with a bar E hinged thereto at one end, as seen at e, and near its other end provided with an opening 6 to receive the end of the other part B and when in its closed position it is thus held by any suitable means, as a removable pin or fastening E passed through one of the openings in the end of the said part B, as indicated in Fig. 1 at the right.

F is a yoke pivotally supported at its center upon the stud a of the yoke A and its ends detachably engaged over studs or pins F on the bars E, so that the hames are mounted upon pivots at the top and bottom, so as to be free to swivel, as will be readily understood. The yoke F is of spring material, so that the ends thereof may be readily disengaged from the studs F when it is desired to apply or remove the hames.

Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

What I claim as new is- 1. The combination with the yoke, of the hames mounted on the ends thereof to swivel and having a portion hinged and provided with a fastening device carrying an upwardlyprojecting pin, and a spring-yoke supported by the first-mentioned yoke with its ends engaging said pin; substantially as described.

2. The combination with a yoke provided at the center on its upper face with draft-attaching means and at its ends on its lower face with depending hollowportions, of hames in hinged sections, one of which is provided at its upper end with a hinged bar adapted to receive the end of the opposite hinged portion, said hames having depending portions passed through the ends of the yoke and through said hollow depending portions and mounted to swivel therein, and keys passed through the ends of pintles 0n the hzunes beneath the said depending portions, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with the oppositely-disposed yokes united at their centers by the swivel connection, the upper yoke being of spring material, of the hanles having studs at their upper and lower ends and mounted to swivel in the ends of the yokes, and bars carry- IO ing the upper studs and hinged to one portion of the hzunes and at the other end having opening's to receive the upper end of the opposite portions of the hames; substantially as described.
