CLARENCE M. HERB, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED WRENCH AND LOCK FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,976, dated. March 24, 1896.
Application filed March 30,1895. Serial No. 543,836. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. HERB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohieago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined W'rench and Look for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tools for bicycles or other similar vehicles in which the weight of all the parts is reduced to the very lowest amount compatible with strength and durability.
The object of my invention is to have a movable part attached to an ordinary wrench, which part may be opened and then closed upon or about some portion of the bicycle, and being adapted to being locked in the closed position serves the double purpose of a wrench and as a means for preventing the bicycle from being operated, as is hereinafter described, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a combined wrench and lock embodying my invention, the same being shown as attached to the two side mem bers of the front fork of a bicycle, so that the shank of the wrench passes between the spokes of the front wheel, which on this account cannot be revolved. Fig. 2 is a view of the wrench with a part of the rear end portion of the shank thereof broken away to show a portion of the lock mechanism, the movable arm of the lock being thrown open. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the front fork of a bicycle, showing spokes of the front wheel and the combined wrench and lock in position for duty.
Similar letters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
A is the shank of the wrench, which may have the usual solid head at one end with a series of jaws which are not adjustable, or may be provided with the head 13, which with its bent end portion 0 forms a set of jaws with the sliding block D, as usual.
One of the most convenient forms of bicyole-wrenches is the kind shown in the drawings, with the shank thereof terminating into a pistol-handle shape, and since this form of handle is usually preferred I have adapted it to my purpose by hinging to the end of the portion E of the shank A the movable arm F, whose unhinged end is provided with a catchhook G, which engages with any form of lock mechanism within the shank of the wrench, such as the spring-hook H, &c., the end of the removable key being shown at I.
In placing the wrench in position for duty across between thespokes J of the front wheel the wrench-jaws are first spread apart wide enough to be easily slid into the position shown, and then the movable arm F being open the wrench is passed in a substantially horizontal position between the spokes, after which the arm F is closed with the member K of the front fork in position, as shown in section in Fig. 1, after which the jaws of the wrench are made to close upon the opposite member L of the fork, where it will effectually prevent the turning of the wheel.
Should the jaws of the wrench be of the non-ad j ustable kind, and therefore not adapted to be closed tightly upon the member L of the front fork, the wrench-shank cannot be moved far from the position shown in Fig. 1 after being locked in position for the reason that the portions E and F fit closely the long oval shape of the section of member K of the fork, which would eifectually prevent such movement.
This device is perfectly adapted to be applied to the sprocket driving-chain of an ordinary safety-bicycle and to several other parts, and as effectually lock the machine as by the method hereinbefore described.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a wrench, the combination, with a shank, one end of which is provided with jaws, and the other end is provided with a laterally-pro j ecting handle substantially parallel with said jaws, and locking mechanism, an arm pivotally secured at one end to the handle and adapted to engage with the looking mechanism with the other, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bicycle-wrench, the combination, with a shank, one end of which is provided with a fixed and a movable jaw, and the other end is hollow and provided with a laterallyprojecting handle substantially parallel with said j aws, of a spring-hook within the hollow, and a movable arm, one end of which is pivotally secured to the end of the handle and the other end is provided with a catch-hook adapted to engage with the swing-11001: substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of March, 1895, in the presence of Witnesses,
CLARENCE M. HERB. Witnesses:
OSCAR SNELL, H. S. BROWN.
