BYRON J. MOORE, OF OAK HILL, ILLINOIS.
ANTIKICKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,829, dated March 24, 1896.
Application filed December 7, 1895. Serial No. 571,342, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, BYRON J. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Hill, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tail-Ties and AntikickingDevices 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for holding the tail and preventing the kicking of a cow while being milked.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a device for holding the tail; but what I more particularly describe is the general construction and means for attaching to a particular part of the animal-nan1ely, the hamstring.
In the drawings herewith presented, Figure .l is a general view of the device fastened to the animal. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a clamping device, showing straps attached. Fig. 3 is an end view of the clamp shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is perspective view of the clamp, showing its application to the hamstring of the animal, and also showing means for holding the tail.
In the several figures a clamp is represented which is made of two portions whose lower extremities are curved to form the semicircular wings A and A. With the said wings are formed the upper extremities or lugs a a, which are hinged together at their free ends, as shown. One of the lugs is provided with a slot 13 and the other with a circular aperture, through both of which is thrust a key I}, whose smaller extremity carries a split pin O for retaining the key in place. The said key is made flat and is made with a shoulder, as shown, which may pass through the slot B.
It will be understood that the key, when in the position shown in Fig. 3, allows the wings A and A to be separated, and when the wings are brought together, as in Fig. 2, the keymay be turned so that the flat portion thereof is at right angles to the slot B, which firmly locks the device. On each of the wings A and'A is secured a staple D, to which straps C and E are attached.
In applying the device the key is turned so as to permit the shoulder to pass through the slot B, and the wings are then separated and the device placed upon the leg of the animal and clamped by means of the key to the hamstring, as shown in Fig. 4. lhe wings are constructed so that they may be locked together around the hamstring without pain to the animal. One of these clamps is placed on either hind leg and a strap from one of the staples of each clamp serves to hold the tail, while from the remaining staples hangs a strap F, to which is secured a strapE, which passes entirely around the legs. This strap E may be drawn up as snugly as desired and serves to prevent kicking. It is obvious that if it is desired to use the device as a tail-tie only it is sufficient to use one of the clamps with its tail-strap.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tail-tie and antikicking device, a clamp composed of two semicircular wings adapted to be attached to the leg of a cow and having the projections or lugs a a forming part of the said wings, and pivoted together at the upper free ends to provide means for opening and closing the said wingsA A, a locking device for keeping the said wings rigid with reference to each other, a staple or fastening attached to either wing and a strap attached to each of the said staples substantially as and for the purposes set forth and described.
2. In a tail-tie and antikicking device, the combination of clamps formed by the pivoted wings A A, one clamp for each hind leg of a cow, straps 0 attached to and connecting both clamps between the legs to hold the tail, a strap F hanging on the outer sides of each of said clamps and a strap passing entirely around the legs and supported by the depending straps substantially as herein set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BYRON J. MOORE.
