HENRY L. lATES, OF MILVAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE UTILITY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOBBIN OR ANALOGOUS DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,745, dated March 24, 1896. Application fil d May 23, 1889. Serial No. 311,808. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. GATES, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbins or Analogous Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to bobbins and analogous devices; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section illustrating a metallic bobbin constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a bottom View of the parts shown in the preceding figure, the bobbin-spindle being in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of an elastic disk that constitutes part of my invention.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A rep-.
resents a bobbin, and B a spindle for the same.
The bobbin is made from sheet metal, provided at intervals with beads 11, these beads being usual in the class of devices to which my invention relates, in order to prevent yarn or other material from slipping off the bobbin on which it may be wound. At its lower end the metallic bobbin is provided with a horizontal flange c, and retained between the main port-ion of this flange and an inwardlyturned extension cl thereof is a packing-disk O of rubber or other suitable elastic material, having a central opening 6 of less diameter than any portion of the spindle B, the latter being tapered as is usual in the art to which my invention relates.
By the construction just described it will be seen that the bobbin is retained at any point on the spindle by the expansive force of the elastic disk (1.
I provide the elastic packing-disk with a series of slits that extend in a radial direction from the central opening 6, and consequently as the bobbin is pushed down on the spindle the slitted central portion of said elastic packing-disk will draw up around said spin- 5o dle to increase the bearing-surface, as is shown in Fig. 1.
W'hilelhave described a bobbin made from sheet metal, it is obvious that the same may be as readily made from malleable metal cast 5 5 into the desired form. The advantage of a metal bobbin over those made from wood, as is ordinarily the case, lies in the fact that said metal bobbin does not split and is therefore more durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A metallic bobbin or an analogous device having an end thereof provided with a flange, and this flange provided with an inwardly-turned extension and a centrallyperforat-ed elastic disk retained between said flange and extension, substantially as set forth.
2. A metallic bobbin or analogous device having an end thereof provided with a flange, and this flange provided with an inwardlyturned extension, and a cen trally-perforated disk retained between said flange and extension and provided with a series of slits radiating from the central perforation, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY L. GATES.
