To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. NORTON, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in furnaces, such as steam-boiler furnaces, and more particularly to draft or combustion promoting devices for furnaces.
The obj cet of the invention is to provide an improved draft-accelerating device for furnaces simple, durable and effective in construction and generally applicable to f urnaces, and wherein a series of steam-j ets create a strong draft into the furnace in such a way as to promote the draft through the burning fuel whether the blast be introduced beneath and passed through the fire or be introduced in the fines or smoke-passages beyond the fire to create a suction through the same.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts more fully and particularly pointed out and described hereinafter.
Referring to. the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a steam-boiler furnace, showing different ways of applying my invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the blast'injector. Fig. 3 is a 1011- gitudinal section thereof. Fig. l is a detail elevation of the perforated steam-chamber. Figs. 5 and G are detail sectional views showing different ways of forming the annular steam-chamber.

Fig. 1 shows the draft-injectorsf extending hrough the furnace-front, and also through the side casing or setting and discharging into the space beneath the grate, and also an airinjector arranged at the exterior of the easing of the furnace with the air-pipe therefrom extending upwardly and into the sinoke-uptake to increase the draft and suction at that point.

The circular series of steam-jets around the interior of the cylinder, allinclined inwardly IOO and usually and approximately towarda c0n1- 1non center, form such a vortex and suction as to draw a powerful and heavy blast of air in through the funnel-shaped mouth and through the cylinder into the ash-pit or into the smoke-flue, or Wherever desired.
In Fig. 1 one of theinjectors is shown supported in a vertical position with its mouth down and with the pipe extended upwardly and into the s1noke-pipe.
The device is so constructed that it can be easily made and put together and so that the parts can be removed and cleansed or for examination without trouble.
I do not limit myself to any particularlocation of the injector, nor to use in any particular connection nor to the particular construction shown and described, as various changes can be made without departingfroln the spirit and scope of my invention.
In Fig. 5 the cap or plate closing one end of the annular steam-chamber is shown with rib to fit in the open end of said chamber and close the same without the employment of the screw-threads. Packing 5 can be in serted between said cap and the outer edge of the chamber if so desired.
In Fig. 6 the outer wall of the chamber is formed by the enlarged end of the cylinder or pipe g and an end wall by the rib i of the closingcap. The other two walls of the easing are formed by a ring L-shaped in crosssection and corresponding to the wings in the other views, except being L-shaped instead of U-shaped in cross-section.
hat I claim is-- A barrel having the annular seat at its outer end, the ring-shaped steam-chamber therein having the series of jet-openings at its inner side, and the ring closing its open side an d provided with an exterior rim, and the mouthpiece secured to the barrel and clamping said rim, substantially as described.
