BOTTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,446, dated March 17, 1896.

To all whom 't may ooncrn:

Be it known that I, ELDRED SHERRELL VANCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Donoho, county of Smith,and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention relates to certain new and usef ul improvements in bottles; and its object is to provide an improved bottle which, having once been filled and emptied of its contents, cannot be refilled, whereby I guard against many frauds practiced by unprincipled persons against the proprietors of certain liquid preparations, the bottle being` refilled in many cases with a poorer quality of the general class of liquids and sold for the same superior quality; and a further object is to provide a bottle which can be made absolutely air-tight.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a Vertical central sectional view of the bottle, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View on the line :Ja a: of Fig. l with the cap removed.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the bottle, which is provided in the usual manner with a neck a and an ordinary cork a'. Near the top of the body of the bottle and below the neck I form a shoulder B, which extends entirely around the bottle, and above this shoulder B, I form another shoulder, O, which is provided with a series of holes c.

A cap E is provided to fit over the top of the bottle, and its rim e rests upon the shoulder B. Inside of the said rim are a series of downwardly-extending projections or fingers e arranged and adapted to fit in the series of holes e in the shoulder C.

In the practice of my invention the bottle is securely corked, after being filled, by means of the stopper a', and the cap E is then arranged in place. The projections e' and contiguous parts are coated with a suitable cement, so that the cap will be rigidly fastened upon the bottle.

When it is desired to open the bottle for the purpose of using its contents, it will be necessary to break the cap E, after which the stopper a' may be removed in the usual manner. The cap E may contain the name and address of the maker or manufacturer, so that its identity will be entirely destroyed when the cap is broken.

As the outer surface of the bottle is perfectly smooth when the cap is in place it will be observed that a superior bottle for commercial purposes is provided.

I am aware' that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of Construction of my invention may be made without departing fron'the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof. I therefore reserve the right to make all changes fairly fallingwithin the scope of the invention.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv v 1. The combination with a bottle, having an annular shoulder formed thereon, said shoulder being provided with a plurality of holes, of a cap which is also provided with an annular shoulder, and downwardly-directed projections forined on or connected with said annular shoulder, which are adapted to enter the holes formed in the shoulder of the bottle, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with abottle, having an annular shoulder as B, formed thereon, and an annular shoulder as C, having a series of holes therein, of a cap adapted to rest upon the shoulder B, and lie flush therewith, and having a series of projections adapted to enter the holes in the shoulder C, said cap being rigidly secured to the bottle, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of a bottle having an annular shoulder B formed thereon, another shoulder C having a series of holes therein, and a cap aclapted to rest upon the shoulder B and lie flush therewith and having a series of projections adapted to enter the holes in the shoulders C and rigidly secure the cap to the bottle substantially as shown and described.
