ALFRED S. EDEY, OF DES MOINES, IOIVA.
CAR-COUPLING.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,406, dated March 17, 1896.
Application filed April 25, 1895. Serial No. 547,198. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED S. EDEY, a citizen of Great Britain, and a resident of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Car- Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to couplers of the vertical-jaw class; and it consists in the construction of a combined latch and lever adapted to securely lock the rear extension of the vertical jaw when the latter is in a closed position, and when elevated to release the jaw will throw the same outwardly in position to couple with a mating jaw, and in the arrangement and combination of the same with other parts of the device, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of the draw-bar with the vertical jaw locked therein by the combined latch and lever. Fig. 2 is a front view of the coupler, showing the position of the combined latch and lever by dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a front view of the combined latch .and lever, and Fig. 5 isa side view of the complete device applied to a car as in practical use.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
' the reference-letter A is used to designate the draw-bar, and A the draw-head formed thereon and adapted to be cast complete in one piece.
B designates the vertical jaw having a rear extension 13 and adapted to be pivoted in the side of the draw-head in the usual manner. The rear extension is adapted to be automatically locked and also moved into an open position by means of a combined latch and lever O, which is extended approximately transversely of the draw-head above the rear extension of the vertical jaw and has a curved tail end adapted to enter a recess in the rear side face of the rear extension of the j aw and a head 0 that is adapted to partially fill a cavity 0 that is formed in the side of the draw-head and the remainder of it pass in front of the rear extension when the latter is in a closed position. A cavity D is formed in the top of the draw-head to receive the said latch and lever and allow it to move vertically Fig. 3 is a top view of the vertical jaw.
therein, and when the rear extension is in a closed position part of the latch and lever is in said cavity and in engagement with the forward edge thereof.
D is a slot in the top of the rear extension, terminating in a recess in the rear face of the extension and adapted to admit the combined latch and lever when in a closed position. It will now be seen that the curved tail end of the said combined latch and lever will engage the rear extension in the recess in its rear side face and also at the sides of the slot at its top and will engage the draw-head inside of the cavity 0 at its end and the cavity D at its top edge, so that the strain thereupon will be equally distributed.
F designates a recess formed in the rear face of the extension B and the end of the combined latch and lever is curved downwardly into said recess in such a manner that when the head of the said latch and lever is raised the end thereof will bear against the rear of the extension B and throw it forwardly and outwardly.
J designates a lever attached to a car, and J 2 a chain connected therewith and passing through the top of the draw-head and attached to the perforated lug J 3 on top of the combined latch and lever 0, whereby it may be operated from the side of the car as required to lift the latch and lever O to unlock the jaw and press it into the open position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Having thus described the coupler, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, 1s-
1. In a car-coupling of the J anney type, a pivoted jaw having a rear extension, a slot across the top face of the said extension and a recess on its rear face and a latch or lever having a head at one end and a downward extension at the other end adapted to enter the recess on the rear face of the rear extension of the jaw, arranged and combined with a draw-head to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
2. An improved car-coupling comprising a draw-bar having a suitable draw-head, a vertical jaw having a rear extension provided with a slotacross its top face and a recess on its rear face pivoted in the side of the drawhead and adapted to enter the cavity in the draw-head, a latch having a downward extension adapted to enter the recess in the rear face of the rear extension of the jaw pivoted in the top of the draw-head cavity, extended transversely thereof, a slot formed in the side of the draw-head and an enlarged head formed on said latch to partially enter said slot and pass in front of the rear extension and prevent it from moving outwardly and means for elevating said latch.
An improved car-coupling comprising the following elements in combination, to wit: the draw-bar A having a draw-head A formed therein, a vertical jaw B pivoted therein, and
