Description
NTT STATES PATENT Trice.
JEREll/IIAH MULLEN, OF ROCHESTERVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
CAR-COUPLING. f
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,496, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed May 1, 1886. Serial No. 200,785. (No model.)
applied and the link coupled. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal Vsection of the draw-head, showing the coupling-pin raised.' Fig. 3 is a bottom .view of the draw-head.
A represents the car iitted in the usual way with a draw-bar, B, having a draw-head, C, D being the ordinary pinfand E the couplinglink. The draw-head is bell-mouthed and ymade of considerable depth, so as to present a large opening tothe free end of 'the couplinglink of a car advancing to be coupled, and facilitate a sure entry. The throat ofthe drawhead only affords sufficient room for the link to lie in it snugly when coupled, and is continued into the draw-bar to accommodate a sliding block, F, which is adapted to be set forward by means of one of a pair of levers, F', one of which is placed on each side of the car, and are pivoted to the block F by means of a pin, f, projecting through a slot, b, in the unf der side of the draw-bar.
rear ofthe car, and provided at each end with a lever-arm, l1, and in the center with a downwardly-bent arm, which is suitably connected by a chain, 7L', or otherwise to the lug g of the frame G. A chain or other connection, I, may also be employed to operate the arm H from the roof of the' car.
My improved coupling operates as follows: The link is raised by pulling down one of the arms 7L orA pulling np the chain I,therehy raising the frame G and the pin D. The blockF is now moved forward by means of one of the 'levers F', and the under-cut end of the block will pass under themend of the pin D and carry' the same, as shown in Fig. 2. A link, E, entering the mouth of the draw-head,will strike against the end of the block F and push it back, thereby removing thersupport of the pin D, which will instantly drop into the link and secure it. `I am aware of Patents Nos. 162,336, 218,466, and 267 ,531, and I do not broadly claima sliding block, F, the levers F', guide-frame G, nor rocking shaft H; but
I claim as my invention- 1 "Ihe combination of the throated drawbar B, Wide-mouthed draw-head C, couplingpin D, sliding-block F, levers F', frame G, rocking shaft H H', connected with the frame G.
2. In a car-coupling, a slidinglblock, F, in combination with pinf, fast in said block, slot b in the draw-head, through which said pin j' projects, and levers F, pivoted to said pin. y
3. The combination of the rocking shaft H, lever-arms 71., downwardly-bent arm H, chain 71,', lug g, bolt d, pin D, and guide-frame G.
