PLACKET-FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES H. SNIVELY and JACOB HIRSOH, citizens of the United States, and residents of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Ilnprovements in Fastening Devices for Gar-- ments or other Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,form ing a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to fastening devices, and particularly to that class thereof which are adapted for use in closing the placketopening of a skirt, although, as will hereinafter appear, our improved fastening device may be used for other and similar purposes.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a view of our improved fastening device, showing the separate parts separated and in full lines, and also showing the same united in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a central transverse section of the fastening devices proper or the heads thereof, showing the method by which said parts are united; and Fig. 3, a perspective'view of a cover of tape, cloth, or other material which we employ.

In the practice of our invention we provide two similar coupling heads or pieces Aand B, each of which is composed of a metal plate folded in the middle, as shown at b and a in Fig. 2, and formed in the adjacent sides of said plates or heads are tongues or projections b and a, respectively, which are cut from the material of the plates or heads, one end and the sides thereof being out out and the body portion being bent outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, by which means slots or recesses b and a are formed, over which the tongues or projections a and 2) project.

Each of the heads or fastening devices A and B is provided with an arm D, the free ends of which are pivotally connected at G, and connected with said arms at G is a piece of tape or similar material H.

In practice we provide a cover for one of the heads or fastening devices composed of a piece of tape, cloth, or other and similar material K, which is folded in the middle, asshown in Fig. 3, and the central portion of which is cut out, forming a longitudinal slot 11;, and, as shown in the drawings, this cover is secured to the head or fastening device B by being folded thereover and stitched thereto around the edges thereof.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

The fastening device is secured to, the skirt by means of the tape H, said tape being stitched within the skirt at the bottom of the placket-opening, or in any other desired manner, and the heads or fastening devicesA and B are secured to the belt at the upper end of said placket-opening and at each side thereof, or they may be secured to the adjacent sides of the skirt below the belt, and when thus secured in position all that is necessary to lock the. same together and securely close said opening is to draw the heads or fastening devices together and slightly past each other, so that the tongues or projections a and b may interlock, as shown in Fig. 2, and in this position the heads or fastening devices will be securely held until they are again separated by reversing the operation by which they were united.

It is evident that our improved fastening device may be employed in connection with other garments or parts thereof, and our invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and we therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
